Whether you are new to travel or well seasoned, one of the most important questions you will ask yourself, perhaps time and time again, is “Where do I want to go?” Some people dream of traveling to a particular country, while some contemplate a specific attraction, be it a famous archeological site like Machu Picchu, or an iconic structure such as the Taj Mahal or Eiffel Tower. Others, concerned simply with the journey, might have their heart set on travelling a legendary routing; Cairo to Cape Town, across the United States on Route 66, or even the Pan-America Highway.
They say every journey begins with a dream. This page is meant to serve as inspiration in your travel planning, with ideas for destinations and things to see and do. Select an attraction you have dreamed of seeing, or leave your mind open to the unlimited possibilities while you look through the list of cities and famous world sites. What inspires you to travel? Ancient cities or modern metropolises? Kangaroos and koalas? The Empire State Building or Fifth Avenue? Hiking in the mountains? French Cuisine? Or is it simply the adventure and freedom that comes with hopping on an airplane and opening your mind to new sights, new cultures, and the endless possibilities that come with travel.
Major cities are often the gateway or main port of entry to a country. In some cases the city itself may be the destination, as is often the case with places like Paris, Venice, or Rome. In other instances people come to see the natural wonders or rural areas of a country and spend little or no time in the main cities. This might include places like Lima, Peru or Bangkok, Thailand, where travelers have their heart set on seeing the archeological sites or hitting the beaches. But cities are often an important part of a countries identity, with a majority of the citizens living in these places. In many cases, particularly if security is not a concern, visitors should take the time to explore major cities.
Many cities, in countries around the world, have an old section, like Old Havana, Cuba or the historic Old Town of Dubrovnik. These city centers are sometimes designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites and contain interesting architecture and historical sites. Capital cities are also known for being the cultural heart of a country, and generally home to the country's national museums, art galleries, and finest institutions. The most famous or largest cities, which may not be the capital city, is also where travelers will find some of the country's best entertainment, be it a Broadway musical in New York City, or a performance by the Vienna Philharmonic in the Vienna Concert Hall.
