Travel in Belgium is largely centered around the cities, where visitors will find all kinds of cultural attractions and things to do. While the main point of entry for travel is usually Brussels, there are many interesting places to see within an easy train ride from here. Depending on the time of year, visitors may also want to include a stop along the North Sea Coast, where there are a number of beaches and summer holiday resorts.
The historic city of Brussels is the country's top destination for most travelers. It is not only the capital city and seat of the Royal Family, it is also an internationally recognized city, with many corporate headquarters, including that of NATO and formerly the Western European Union. Consequently it is a busy city which receives a large number of visitors. Fine restaurants and hotels are easy to find. Most tourists will want to take in the splendid display of Art Nouveau architecture and wander through the Old Town. Some of the main sightseeing highlights are the Grand Place, Town Hall, and the famous Belgian Royal Museum of Fine Arts.
Antwerp, just a short train ride from Brussels, is another popular city in Belgium. Located on the River Scheldt, it is home to one of the largest sea ports in Europe. Visitors should take at least a day to explore the sights of the city center. Some of the main tourist attractions here are the Cathedral of Our Lady, the Grote Markt, the many fine museums, and the surprisingly impressive Antwerp Zoo.
Also under an hour's train ride from Brussels is the port city of Ghent. The city's famous Belfry on the west side of Sint-Baafsplein is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tower was originally constructed in the 14th C and has long been the main landmark features of Ghent. From the tower platform are great views of the city. Ghent has many other interesting attractions, much of which includes fine architecture and a number of good museums.
Lastly, the medieval old town center of Bruges, a main trading center in the 12th and 13th C, is another of Belgium's great tourist attractions. The entire old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a countless number of great sights. The canals, narrow streets, and old buildings make this one of the country's most charming destinations.
