Bendigo (pop. 70,000) was once one of the wealthiest gold towns in Australia. It has preserved many old buildings from its 19th C. heyday.
Although mining for gold, which began here in 1851, ceased in the 1950s, Bendigo's past as a gold-mining town is still very much alive, particularly in the 100-year-old Central Deborah Mine, with a shaft going down 396 m, which is now a museum. A vintage tram, with a recorded commentary, takes visitors from the Central Deborah Mine through the town center to the Chinese temple.
Among the most interesting buildings are the Shamrock Hotel, the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, the post office and the Bendigo Art Gallery. Other features of interest are the fountain at Charing Cross, the lookout tower (an old mine winding tower) in Rosalind Park and the police station and jail. The Chinese temple was built around 1860, when Bendigo had a large Chinese community. During the Easter Fair an enormous Chinese dragon is paraded through the streets.
The Bendigo Pottery at Epsom, 7km from Bendigo on the Midland Highway, is believed to be Australia's oldest pottery.
