Kalundborg - Church of Our Lady Vor Frue Kirke

Kalundborg's landmark is the five-towered Church of Our Lady (Vor Frue Kirke) on the castle mound in Adelgade, which was built about 1170. The walls stand on a granite base and the plan of the church is in the form of a Greek cross with four arms of equal length. It has five towers - an octagonal one on each arm of the cross and a massive square one (41m/135ft high) in the center.

The towers are surmounted by pointed spires and four of them have names - St Gertrude, St Catherine, St Anne and St Magdalene.

Inside, the pilasters and sunken semi-circular columns together with the lines of the window-arches on the outside suggest the work of a master builder from Lombardy. Note the altar-piece (1650) in the traditional Baroque style by the carver Lorents Jorgensen, and the granite font with palm motifs which dates from the time the church was built. Traces of wall-paintings can be detected.
