Salzburg - Benedictine Abbey of St Peter
Situated on the western side of the Salzburg Kapitelplatz, the Benedictine Archepiscopal Abbey of St Peter (Erzabtei St Peter) was founded by St Rupert about 690 and was the residence of the Archbishops until 1110. The present buildings date mainly from the 17th and 18th C.
The tower is thought to be the first of the onion towers.

St Peter's Churchyard
Salzburg's Festungsgasse leads to the venerable and impressive St Peter's Churchyard (Friedhof St Peter), surrounded on three sides by arcades (1627) containing family tombs. To the south it backs on to the sheer rock face of the Mönchsberg, in which are Early Christian catacombs and St Maximus' Chapel, hewn from the solid rock. The Late Gothic St Margaret's Chapel (closed to visitors) in the center of the churchyard was built in 1485-91.
Haydn Memorial
In the St Peter's Abbey courtyard can be found the Haydn memorial. On display are items illustrating the life and work of the "Salzburg Haydn". i.e. Johann Michael Haydn (1737-1806), the brother of Joseph Haydn. From 1763 he lived in Salzburg as court musician, and from 1781 succeeded W. A. Mozart as court and cathedral organist.

St Peter's Abbey Courtyard
A passage leads from Salzburg's St Pete's Abbey churchyard into the outer courtyard of the abbey, with the Petrusbrunnen (St Peter's Fountain) of 1673. To the left is the entrance to the Stiftskeller St Peter (restaurant). On the western side of the courtyard a passage leads to the Benedictine College (1925-26).
