Eisenkappel Attractions

A road leads from Völkermarkt to the Seebergsattel (1,218m/3,996ft), on the Yugoslav frontier. The road passes through Eberndorf (8km/5mi) and comes in 23km/14mi to Eisenkappel (558m/1,831ft; pop. 1,500), the chief place in the Vellach valley and the most southerly market village in Austria, frequented both as a summer and winter sports resort. The name refers to an old chapel and the hammer mills (Eisen = "iron") which once operated here. By the cemetery stands the pilgrimage church of Maria Dorn (frescos). 8km/5mi to the southwest lies the Trögerner Klamm (gorge).
