Lemesós - Akrotíri

Akrotiri is a British Sovereign Base in the Limassol region. Sovereignty over the base was granted to the British under the Independence settlement and it remains of central strategic importance to the British military and NATO.

Lady's Mile is the main beach on the peninsula, and stretches for 5mi/8km. It is reached by heading towards the main port and then following the signs to the beach. The road is quite bad in places but improves the further you get from town. The landscape is quite interesting, with the flat dustiness of the salt lake on the right and even in summer visitors can smell the distinctive scent of salt.

The beach itself is long and sandy. The far end of the beach is closed off by barbed wire, behind which is the RAF base of Akrotiri.

St Nicholas of the Cats Church was founded in A.D. 325 although the current buildings date from the 13th century. It was abandoned in 1570 under the Turkish occupation. Above the north entrance is a marble section dating from the medieval period and depicting four coats of arms.

Cats were introduced to control pests, especially snakes, but the cats now overrun the place. It is occupied today by nuns and visitors can look around.
