Paris - Picasso Museum Musée Picasso
The undoubted creator of the Picasso Museum was André Malraux. It was on his initiative, when Minister of Culture, that a law was passed enabling important works of art to be accepted in payment of estate duty. After the death of Pablo Picasso the State became the owner of 203 paintings, 159 works of sculpture, 30 reliefs, 16 paper collages, 88 ceramic pieces and over 3,000 sheets of drawings and printed graphic art, as well as illustrated manuscripts and correspondence.

The collection is displayed in the Hôtel Salé, a magnificent town mansion with semicircular wings built for Albert de Fontenay by Jean Boullier and lavishly decorated by Martin Desjardin and the Marsy brothers. As Fontenay was a salt-tax collector his house became known as the Hôtel Salé ("Salt House").
The Picasso collection is complemented by a selection of works by artists who influenced him, including Cézanne, Renoir, Matisse, Derain, Braque, Miró and Rousseau.

Dominique Bozo
In the selection of the works to be shown, in which Dominique Bozo took the leading place, the aim was to display the whole spectrum of Picasso's creative work and at the same time to reveal all the various artistic styles which he practiced and influenced in the course of his life. In no other museum in the world is such a wide range of an artist's work to be found and the course of his development illustrated in such a complete and balanced manner.
Interior
The interior of the Hôtel Salé (carefully restored by Roland Simounet) has rich stucco decoration. The visit begins with Picasso's "Man with a Lamb". In harmony with the architecture and rich ornament of the mansion, the old figurative decoration and the furniture by Diego Giacometto, the 20 rooms of the museum illustrate Picasso's development from his Blue Period to his latest work such as "Old Man, Seated" (1970-71).
