Los Angeles CountyLocation and generalSanta Monica was founded in 1886 at the southern end of the mountain range bearing the same name and of Santa Monica Bay. Although linked to the Los Angeles road network it remains an independent town, highly thought of as a residential area and resort. Its name is derived from that of the god-fearing Monica. She was the mother of St Augustine, one of the four Latin Fathers of the Church. In recent years some industrial firms have become established here, the principal one being the Douglas Aircraft Company.
Santa Monica Beach
Santa Monica's beach is 3mi/5km long and ranks as one of the best in Greater Los Angeles. Palisades Park, with a view over the Pacific, runs along Ocean Avenue between Colorado and San Vincente Boulevards. It is particularly noted for its beautiful gardens.
Georgian Hotel
The Georgian is an Art Deco hotel in Santa Monica, built in 1933. Originally named The Lady Windemere, this oceanside resort was the dream of Ms. Rosamond Borde. During the 1950s, when Los Angeles began to develop into a major metropolitan city, the Lady Windemere was sold, refurbished and renamed the Georgian. It has 28 suites and 56 guest rooms.
Bergamot Station
Bergamot Station in Santa Monica is a 5.5 acre arts complex where contemporary art is on display. The art is located within 22 galleries in old warehouses made of aluminum siding.
Santa Monica Museum of Art
The Santa Monica Museum of Art is located in an old building redesigned by architect Frank Gehry and is devoted to collections of contemporary art.
California Heritage Museum
The California Heritage Museum in Santa Monica was built in 1894 as the home of Roy Jones the son of the founder of the city. The museum contains artifacts from the 1890's through the 1930's reflecting the history of the state.
Museum of Flying
There are forty aircraft at the Museum of Flying in Santa Monica including Mustangs and Spitfires from World War II. The museum is located on the site of the construction of the first DC 3.
