Cambria, California
San Luis Obispo CountyLocation and general commentsOnly 6mi/10km south of San Simeon, the site of the castle built by William Randolph Hearst, and not far from Highway U.S. 1, lies the little town of Cambria, which offers a welcome change. It is built almost entirely in the English style, and because of its quiet atmosphere and its beautiful beach, numerous artists have chosen to live there. The short detour before going on to Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo is worthwhile, not least because of the many interesting shops. In an historical schoolhouse dating from 1881 the Cambria Allied Arts Association offers an insight into the work of native artists.

Known for its extensive sand dunes, vehicles are prohibited in the Dunes reserve.
Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove
Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove is the site of thousands of vibrant orange and black Monarch butterflies who arrive seeking shelter from the Northern winters. The butterflies gather in a grove of Eucalyptus trees from late October to February. During this time, docents offer daily talks and information.

Arroyo Grande, California
Arroyo Grande (pop. 14,378) is located 11mi/18km southeast of San Luis Obispo. It was founded in 1862. It took another five years before structures were built in the town.
Lopez Lake Recreational Area
The Lopez Lake Recreational Area offers the visitor fishing, boating, camping and hiking. It is located near Arroyo Grande.

Charles Paddock Zoo
The Charles Paddock Zoo is located 1.5 miles west of Atascadero. This five acre zoo has a diverse mix of over 100 animals, including tigers, jaguars, alligators, wallabies, meerkat, spider monkeys, bears, and servals.
Paso Robles, California
Paso Robles is on the Salinas River 24mi/39km north of San Luis Obispo. The downtown area has antique stores, restaurants, spas and a Victorian neighborhood.
El Paso De Robles Area Pioneer Museum
The El Paso De Robles Area Pioneer Museum exhibits the cultural history of the area through displays of American Indian artifacts, vintage farming equipment and ranching equipment. Detailed displays, historical literature and memorabilia recreate days gone by.

Set on 1,500 acres the Oceano Dunes State Recreation Area is a delight for offroaders. It is located in Oceano, three miles south of Pismo Beach. There are beaches and dunes which are ideal for motorcycles, four wheel drive vehicles and dune buggies.
