Yellowstone - Yellowstone River
Emerging from Yellowstone Lake, the Yellowstone River flows through a quiet valley, with bison grazing on the meadows; then, to the north of Hayden Valley, it plunges over two spectacular waterfalls into a wild and romantic canyon.
There is a fascinating walk along the river that introduces visitors to the geology of the region, passing old lava flows and less well known zones of geothermal activity.

Hayden Valley
In Hayden Valley, a western side valley of almost genial aspect, a variety of wild life can be observed, including bison, deer and sometimes grizzly bears.
Mud Volcano
A few miles below Fishing Bridge are the striking mud volcanoes of the Mud Volcano Area and the simmering Sulphur Caldron. Visitors must take care to stay on the boardwalks.
Upper Falls
The easily accessible Upper Falls on the Yellowstone River drop 110 ft. A few hundred yards lower down the river plunges 310 ft into a gorge with a deafening roar. As a result of chemical reactions in the rhyolite which outcrops here the walls of the gorge shimmer in reddish to yellow tones. There are very fine views of the falls from Lookout Point and Grandview Point on the north side of the valley, near the holiday settlement of Canyon Village.
