Amid the gentle hills of central Virginia is the town of Charlottesville, founded in 1762, the development of which was much influenced by Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States, who was born near here.
The University of Virginia was founded by Jefferson in 1819, and its red-brick buildings were designed by him. Among students
here was Edgar Allan Poe, whose room (No. 13 in the West Building) can be visited.
