Navajo Indian Reservation

The entire Navajo Reservation covers about 27,000 square miles of Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. A section of it takes up a large portion of San Juan County in Utah, from the San Juan River south to the Arizona border.

Aneth, Utah
Aneth (pop. 600) is a small community on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Utah. It is located ten miles west of the Colorado border at an elevation of 4,350 feet. It is home to the Aneth Oil Field.
Halchita, Utah
Halchita (pop. 270) is located across the San Juan River from Mexican Hat, at the north end of the Navajo Indian Reservation in southeastern Utah. The town, which gets its name from the Navajo word for "Red Lands", has a uranium millsite and sits at an altitude of 4,350ft/1,326m.
Montezuma Creek, Utah
Montezuma Creek (pop. 500) is a village on the Navajo Indian Reservation near the Utah and New Mexico border. The town sits at an elevation of 4,300ft/1,310m. The land was given to the Navajo in exchange for the territory they gave up during the formation of Lake Powell.
Navajo Mountain, Utah
Navajo Mountain (pop. 380) is the most remote community in San Juan County, with 180 homes located at an elevation of 6,500ft/1,981m on the Navajo Indian Reservation. Road access is possible only from Arizona. Navajo Mountain has the trail head for the Rainbow Bridge Trail, which descends for 17mi/27km to Rainbow Bridge National Monument.
