La Soufrière is an active volcano and the highest peak on the island at 1234m (3949 ft). It has had two major eruptions in the past century. On May 7, 1902, an eruption killed 2,000 people. A second eruption in 1979 caused the evacuation of 20,000 people from the northern villages and caused extensive crop damage.
