Zebbug Attractions

This is one of the original 10 parishes recorded in 1436 and is a wealthy country village. The festival or Festa of St Philip is held here every year on the second Sunday in June.

Grand Master de Rohan adopted Zebbug and elevated it to a city, renaming it Citta Rohan, and built the triumphal arch to the entrance of the village. In its older streets off St Anthony Street and Hospital Square are many generous old houses. Some of the cuboid buildings here go back to the 16th century.
Parish Church of St Philip
In the main square is the Parish Church of St Philip, begun in 1599. It was initially the work of Cassars, but Dingli finished it 60 years later. It is far more ornate than Cassar's most famous church, St John's Co-Cathedral, which was built more than 25 years earlier. The two towers seem squeezed together in the screen facade, isolating the twin domes either side. For a lavish interior, study the north and south transepts and the coffered semi-circular vault.
