Description
An attractive trip from Ceuta is to Monte Hacho (194m/637ft), 4km/2.5mi away. From the summit of the hill, on which are the Ermita de San Antonio (1593) and an old fort, there are extensive views of the town and harbor, the Moroccan coast and, in clear weather, Gibraltar. Monte Hacho is probably the legendary Mount Abyla, in Greek and Roman mythology one of the Pillars of Hercules which marked the end of the known world. Its counterpart in Europe is the Rock of Gibraltar. Monte Hacho is reached by taking the coast road (the Recinto Sur) which runs east along the south side of the peninsula. This leads to the lighthouse on Punta Almina, from which there are magnificent views of Gibraltar to the north and the Rif mountains to the southeast.
