Mount Shasta Attractions

Siskiyou County

Location and general

Situated not far from Redding in the Shasta Trinity National Forest on the U.S. 5, this little town is the starting point for water-sport trips to Siskiyou Lake, 2.5mi/4km away, and for climbing the 14,168ft/4,317m-high mountain of the same name, Mount Shasta. For a time the peak was called Shatasia or Sastise. These are variations of the spelling of the name of the Shasta Indians who originally lived there. A somewhat lower peak stands west of Mount Shasta and bears a similar name, Mount Shastina. Mount Shasta was first climbed in 1854.
Headwaters of the Sacramento River
In Mount Shasta City Park visitors will find the headwaters of the Sacramento River. The water flows from underground springs through a lava tube and into Cold Creek.
Mount Shasta Ski Park
Mount Shasta Ski Park is located 10 miles east of Mount Shasta City. This hill has a vertical drop of 1,1100 ft and three lifts. There are 15 kilometers of cross country trails.
Mount Shasta State Fish Hatchery & Sisson Museum
The Sisson Museum is housed in the old hatchery building, built in 1906. Exhibits include the history of Mount Shasta as well as Native American and geology artifacts. The Mount Shasta Fish Hatchery produces three to five million trout annually to stock the streams and lakes of northern California.
