Between San Diego And San Bernardino Is A Laid-Back City With Nearby Lakes, Parks, And Family Fun
When discussing inland California destinations, travelers often mention outdoor recreation hotspots like Yosemite or Joshua Tree National Park. After all, California is the best state for national park adventures, with nine options within its borders. However, you don't need to visit a world-renowned landmark to experience the Golden State's abundant natural beauty. In fact, if you head about 90 minutes north of San Diego (or 30 minutes south of San Bernardino), you'll run into one such scenic locale: Moreno Valley.
But what makes Moreno Valley such a vibrant travel destination? First, it's close to some incredible lakes, such as Lake Perris and seasonal Mystic Lake, as well as Box Springs Mountain, which is ideal for hiking and enjoying sweeping views of the region. Second, Moreno Valley has a variety of city parks that allow you and your little ones to play outside without having to travel far. Finally, Moreno Valley Mall features multiple indoor activities and amenities to help round out your vacation options.
Overall, if you're trying to have a quieter, laid-back California trip that's still entertaining for the whole family, Moreno Valley may be just the answer.
Exploring the great outdoors in Moreno Valley, California
One of the best reasons to visit Moreno Valley is to explore its natural spaces, and there are plenty of ways to do that. If you're more into hiking, you might want to head north of town and check out Box Springs Mountain Reserve, which covers 3,400 acres. The mountain rises to over 3,000 feet above sea level, providing incredible views of the valley below. There are 10 main hiking trails, which vary in length from a breezy 0.2 miles on the Ridge Trail to the 3.8-mile "M" Trail.
If you prefer lakeside activities, head to the opposite side of town and venture through the Lake Perris State Recreation Area. This park covers over 8,800 acres, including the nearly 2,300 acres of Lake Perris itself. The water is great for boating and fishing, but keep in mind that your watercraft must be clean, drained, and dry and pass an inspection before entering Lake Perris to prevent the spread of invasive mussels. Anglers ages 16 and older must have a valid California fishing license, and the species found here include bass, trout, and catfish. Then, if you want to continue your lakeside adventures, you can drive about 40 minutes south to Lake Elsinore, another laid-back lake city with fishing and parks.
For recreation within the city, options include Shadow Mountain Park, which has a decent playground and sports fields, or Celebration Park, which may be small but features a seasonal splash pad along with its playground.
Planning a fun family trip to Moreno Valley
Ontario International Airport is a nearby commercial airport, about half an hour northwest of the city. However, if you want to make your travel experience more fun, you can visit one of the most interesting airports in the US, Long Beach Airport, which is just over an hour west. As far as accommodations go, there are numerous hotels and vacation rentals throughout the city. But if you're looking to add a little whimsy to the occasion, Harry's Man Cave Motel offers a vintage roadside-motel experience, complete with bright colors and kitschy decor.
While we've covered outdoor entertainment so far, what do you do when the weather gets too hot and sunny? After all, Moreno Valley's summers are hot and dry. Fortunately, the Moreno Valley Mall offers multiple indoor recreation options. There's the Harkins Movie Theater, as well as a trampoline park and indoor playground, so your little ones can run around.
