Compared to other states, California is really something special for travelers. Not only is it the best state for national park adventures, but its sprawling coastline has so many fabulous beach towns and stretches of pristine sand. While you can practically just throw a dart at any one of them and hit a winning destination, there's one spot that actually made a list of California destinations recommended by travel experts for a long weekend: Dana Point.

With so much competition in the Golden State, what sets the relatively small town of Dana Point apart? First and foremost, it's a harbor city, so you can get a real connection to the ocean and its wildlife. In fact, the city is known as the "whale-watching capital of the world," so it's easy to book a seat on a whale-watching tour or charter a boat for fishing or just enjoying the sea.

But you don't have to venture out onto the water to appreciate Dana Point. The city also has its fair share of scenic beaches, secluded natural areas, and delicious Californian cuisine. Plus, the city has high-end homes and resorts.

What to expect when visiting Dana Point, California

Since Dana Point Harbor was a primary attraction when the city was listed as a top getaway destination, let's begin our overview there. First, since the area is known for its whales and dolphins, you can book a tour with a service like Captain Dave's Dolphin and Whale Watching Safari or Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching. These operators offer tours all year round, so you don't have to wait for a particular season. Alternatively, you can rent your own boat to explore the ocean or try to catch some fish. Fish you can catch in the waters around Dana Point include bass, halibut, yellowtail, and tuna.

Another great reason to visit the harbor is to get a ride to Catalina Island, home of one of the best hidden beaches in California, Ben Weston Beach. But if it's beaches you want, you can find several around the harbor where you can enjoy the sand and watch the boats come and go. For example, Baby Beach is inside the harbor, so it has calm waters and easy access to nearby amenities. It's also next to the Ocean Institute, where you can learn more about the local wildlife and ecosystem via interactive exhibits. On the other side of the harbor is Doheny State Beach, which has multiple picnic areas, sand volleyball courts, and even its own aquarium.

If you prefer more greenery in your scenery, you can take advantage of several parks that overlook the harbor and the surrounding area. Both Heritage Park and Lantern Bay Park sit on the bluffs, so you get sweeping views of the ocean. For more wilderness, try the trail through the Dana Point Preserve, checking the preserve's website for current opening days and hours.

Planning your weekend getaway to Dana Point

When it comes to dining, Dana Point has you covered if you love fresh seafood and ocean views. For example, the Chart House sits on top of the bluffs, offering views stretching up to 50 miles away on a clear day. The menu consists of decadent dishes like lobster California rolls, an impressive seafood tower, or prime rib. If you'd rather be next to the water, you can visit Turk's Dana Warf, which is far more casual and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the harbor.

Finally, staying in Dana Point means you can access other highlights of Southern California. To the north is the world-famous Laguna Beach, while San Diego is to the south. Or, if you want to explore some of the state's Spanish and Mexican history, you can head inland to the California city that offers a quieter getaway and iconic sites: San Juan Capistrano.
