Colorado's Adorable Town In The Heart Of The Rocky Mountains Is A Scenic Recreation Haven
There is nothing in the world like fresh mountain air, and Colorado has it in spades, along with some gorgeous scenery. However, if you're looking for a quieter mountain alternative to Aspen or Boulder, you may want to consider the charming town of Crested Butte, Colorado. Crested Butte sits in the Elk Mountain Range, in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Its colorful downtown is a great place to dine and shop, while the surrounding mountains offer skiing, hikes through summer wildflowers, and scenic drives to see the aspens change color in autumn.
In the winter, Crested Butte is great for advanced skiers, with over 1,500 acres of terrain featuring extensive black diamond areas. (It also has trails for beginners and intermediates.) Crested Butte was named one of the best areas for skiing in Colorado by Forbes in 2024. In the summer, you can hike and bike through the wildflowers or check out the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival in July, with guided hikes, workshops, and more.
Crested Butte is a year-round town with average highs between the high 60s and low 70s Fahrenheit in summer and early fall. From November through March, average highs range from the mid-to-upper 20s to the upper 30s Fahrenheit. There is a free, wheelchair-accessible town shuttle to help you get around. One thing to note is that the town is close to 9,000 feet above sea level, so if you're prone to altitude sickness, you may want to stay at a lower altitude for a bit to adjust.
Things to do in Crested Butte, Colorado when the weather is warm
While you may think of winter sports when considering a Colorado vacation, Crested Butte also offers plenty to do in the warmer months. It's the "Wildflower Capital of Colorado," and hiking and biking offer ways to see the blooms beyond the wildflower festival. In the fall, particularly September and October, the aspens in the area change from green to gold, and around 7 miles from town is Kebler Pass, which has the largest aspen grove in Colorado.
Hikers and bikers have many trails to explore in Crested Butte. On the easy side, there is the multi-use Crested Butte Upper and Lower Loop, which is a 4.5-mile hike with 347 feet of elevation gain. It's great for wildflower and foliage viewing, with beautiful vistas to enjoy. One reviewer on AllTrails says, "This trail is about as bang for your buck as it gets! Absolutely fabulous views the entire time." You can also try the moderate multi-use Lower Loop Trail during the warmer months. This 7.2-mile loop has a 498-foot elevation gain and is good for animal spotting and wildflowers. Note that there isn't much shade, so prepare accordingly.
After your excursions, take some time to enjoy the pretty town with some shopping. Townie Books is a neighborhood store and features Rumors Coffee & Tea House so you can warm up with a coffee or tea and a snack. You may also want to stop in Zacchariah Zypp for lapis lazuli jewelry from local artists, as this area is one of the best spots for the stone.
