This Popular City Is America's Best Summer Travel Destination Of 2026 So Far

When planning a summer vacation, it's always crucial to pick the right spot. Whether you're traveling solo, with a partner, or with kids in tow, you need to make sure everyone can have a good time. As far as U.S. cities go, many people would assume that LA, Orlando, or Las Vegas would be at the top of the list. And while they are all impressive for different reasons, another city actually beat them all, according to a 2026 ranking by WalletHub. Atlanta, Georgia, took the No. 1 spot for best summer travel destination, but why is that?

According to WalletHub, the main reasons were that Atlanta is an easily accessible travel hub (it does have one of the top three U.S. airports with the most non-stop flights), has a diverse range of activities and attractions, and has late-night spots that stay open later than most. As an Atlanta local myself, I can attest to these factors and would certainly recommend the city for all types of travelers. Whether you're a foodie, a history buff, a nature lover, or looking for unique family-friendly activities, Atlanta (and its greater metro area) has it all.

Notable reasons WalletHub placed Atlanta first were the diversity of attractions, including shopping options; places to cool off; and late-night spots. For the shoppers, Atlanta is home to some incredible malls and shopping districts, like Lenox Square or Ponce City Market, the latter of which is housed inside an old Sears building, adding history to the experience. If you're visiting during the summer, it is quite hot and humid, but you can cool off at various places throughout the city. For example, the aquatic center at Piedmont Park (also home to the Atlanta Botanical Garden, known as one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the United States) allows you to swim or get wet at its splash pad. Alternatively, you can dance in the Olympic ring fountain at Centennial Olympic Park in the heart of downtown. Or, skip the water and head to the indoor (and air-conditioned) theme park Thrillz.

Then, there are the world-famous attractions. One of my personal favorites is the Georgia Aquarium, which is the largest in the Western hemisphere. It's also next to the World of Coca-Cola, Centennial Olympic Park, and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. Or, if you want to get your steps in, you can take the 22-mile Beltline that surrounds Downtown Atlanta, which is full of parks, artworks, and local businesses.

Since Atlanta is known for hot summer nights, it's easy to stay out late and enjoy the city. Underground Atlanta is a lively hotspot complete with art galleries, nightclubs, live music, and delicious food. After the bars close, if you're still hungry, you can walk down Pryor Street and hit up Mr Fries Man, a casual spot serving gourmet-style fries until 5 a.m. on most nights.

One of the primary reasons Atlanta topped the 2026 list was its ease of travel. Flying here is relatively smooth, with Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) being the busiest airport in the world and a central hub for Delta Air Lines. This means it's easier to find a direct flight, and flights are generally more affordable than at other airports. According to the travel site Kayak, average plane tickets to Atlanta are around $350 at the time of this writing, but depending on where you're coming from, they can be as little as $50 to $100 one way.

As a major travel destination — which recently hosted the World Cup in 2026 — Atlanta has an abundance of accommodation options to fit any budget. From cost-effective motels to luxury resorts, you can find the right mix to suit your preferences, whether you're traveling by yourself or with a large group. Plus, if you're sticking to central Atlanta, you can get around using MARTA or the Atlanta Streetcar, rather than having to rent a car.

Finally, as you explore central Atlanta, you'll likely want a unique place to eat. Fortunately, Atlanta has some great options to enhance your visit.
