Carlsbad formerly known as Eddy, was founded in 1888. Located 70mi/113km south of Roswell, the town is the seat of Eddy County in southeastern New Mexico.

The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in Carlsbad displays over 40 native animal species and a variety of plant life. This indoor/outdoor living museum allows visitors to tour the walk-through aviary, glimpse the endangered gray wolves and view the succulents and cacti from around the world.

Carlsbad Caverns are among the largest cave systems in the world. Rock carvings at the site reveal they were known to Indians as early as the 10th and 11th C.
Twelve miles north of Carlsbad on U.S. 285 is Brantley Lake State Park, an artificial lake popular for water sports. Fishing for a variety of warm water fish such as largemouth bass, walleye, channel catfish, white bass, bluegill and crappie is available.
