Karlstad, the cultural and commercial center of Värmland, chief town of the county and the see of a bishop, lies in the delta of the Klarälv, at the point where the river flows into Lake Vänern after a course of 500km/310mi. Boating in the archipelago or canoeing on Klarälven are popular activities along with fishing and watersports.
The town is named after Charles IX, who in 1584 granted a municipal charter to the settlement on the island of Tingvalla which had existed since the early medieval period as a trading station and place of assembly (the meeting place of the ting). In 1905 negotiations took place here on the dissolution of the union between Sweden and Norway. Karlstad is now a considerable industrial town (mainly woodworking).
