To the south of Lake Sakakawea, on an old camping ground of the Mandan and Hidatsa Indians, is the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site, where a number of villages of the Prairie Indians have been rebuilt in an attempt to preserve their culture.

The area around the village is also very scenic with a variety of wildlife.
