28 mi. south of Vicksburg in Port Gibson, thought by General Grant to be almost as beautiful as Natchez, which explains why it has remained relatively unspoilt and still has some lovely pre-war houses. "Windsor", south of the town, was not so lucky - all that remains of that mansion are some impressive ruins.
Port Gibson (pop. 1,850) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The First Presbyterian Church in Port Gibson features a unique gold-leaf hand on the steeple. It was originally carved from wood by a 17 year old in 1859. However weathering deteriorated the structure and it was eventually replaced by a 12 foot high metal hand.
The interior of the church houses chandeliers from the Robert E Lee steamboat.
