Old Goa Attractions
Old Goa was founded in the 15th C, the city was surrounded by a moat and contained the Shah's palace, his mosques and temples. From 1510 to 1961, the city of Goa was under Portugese rule. It was the administrative seat of Portuguese India until 1843. Old Goa was a prosperous and thriving city. The city's decline came about due to a series of epidemics (cholera, malaria and other tropical diseases) which ravaged the city in the 17th C.
Old Goa contains some of India's most awe-inspiring churches. Old Goa is a World Heritage Site and many of the churches have been restored, some are still in use.
The churches and a portion of the palace are all that remain of city that was compared to Lisbon as a rival.

Basilica of Bom Jesus
The Basilica of Bom Jesus is an early 17th C church housing the remains of St Francis Xavier. The marble tomb contains a silver casket, and bronze plaques portray his life.
