Gettysburg - Oak Ridge
Oak Ridge was the site of the opening day battle of the Civil War. Confederate troops struck the Union positions at the McPherson Farm and along Oak Ridge. General Robert E. Rodes' Division of Ewell's Corps, having marched from Carlisle, struck toward the right of the 1st Corps on Oak Ridge, the northern extension of Seminary Ridge. A Union brigade commanded by Colonel Henry Baxter repulsed several Confederate assaults and annihilated a North Carolina Brigade commanded by Brig. General Alfred Iverson.

General Lee's Headquarters Museum
General Lee's Headquarters Museum occupies the general's former headquarters from the summer of 1863. Since opening in 1922, the Lee Museum has displayed artifacts and relics found on the battlefield. It remains one of the oldest museums in Gettysburg. Lee chose this house not only because of this close proximity to the center of the Confederate line, but also because the house with its thick wall afforded the General some physical protection from artillery shells.

Oak Ridge Monuments
Around Oak Ridge are monuments placed by veterans of that key battle. Notably, Veterans of the 90th Pennsylvania Infantry recalled the large stump of the tree that stood near this spot during the battle, and voted to place its likeness in granite, adorned with the bronze accoutrements of war, to mark the site where the regiment fought that day.
