Best Time to Visit Resorts in New York State

The best time to visit resorts in New York State is summer. During the state's summer season, which includes the months of June, July, and August, you can expect mostly pleasant daytime temperatures in the high 70s Fahrenheit and even into the 80s, though highs in the 90s have been known. Rainfall is also minimal during this time of year, though the occasional thunderstorm is not uncommon and can cool a hot day down.

While a relatively short season given its northerly location, spring can be quite pleasant in New York. Lasting from March through April and into May, spring temperatures will reach their peak in the 70s Fahrenheit before transitioning to summer weather. While March and April will still be cool with an increased chance of rainfall, May's a good time to visit New York State, as you can expect to see the warmer temperature bringing with it the arrival of tree foliage and flowers.

Lasting from September through October and into November, autumn in New York State is generally dry, with any longer periods of rain typically holding off until the last weeks of the season. As for temperatures, fall generally starts off quite warm as summer weather lingers, but by season's end, you can expect things to drop off to daytime lows in the 60s Fahrenheit and nighttime lows in the 50s.

While many would consider winter the worst time to visit New York State, it's a different story for skiers. Winter here lasts from December through January into February, and while much of the southern part of the state will be cold and often cloudy during the winter months with moderate precipitation, upper New York State is colder and much snowier, particularly where it matters: on the ski slopes. In fact, in the popular winter destination of the Adirondack Mountains, you can expect to see as much as 90 inches of snow during the winter months.
