When it comes to coastlines in Mexico, few places are more spectacular than Tulum. It's been drawing admirers for centuries, actually, first as a port for the ancient Mayans, then as a backpacker's hideaway off the beaten path from Cancun. Today, however, it's one of the top places in the country for boho-chic, barefoot luxury with an eco-friendly ethos and offers some lovely resorts.

Tulum has some of the most pristine beaches in Mexico – a true postcard snapshot of everything you'd expect from a tropical retreat. It also has restaurants created by world-renowned chefs; boutiques stocked with designer goods; and a heavy emphasis on yoga and healthy living, particularly along the coast.

Tulum's town center is a bit more urban, with cheaper restaurants and budget accommodations. Everything, however, is near historic attractions like the Tulum archaeological site, the ruins at Coba, and the massive Sian Ka'an Biosphere.

Tulum is packed with dozens of places to stay, so choosing the right spot can be daunting, especially with so many great options available. To help make your decision a little easier, read our list of the best resorts in Tulum.

At Tulum's La Zebra, it's all about the convenience of its location and a little bit of luxury as well. Right in the heart of Tulum's hotel zone, it's within walking distance to the boutiques, restaurants, and social scene of Tulum. Its other bragging right is the sweeping swath of bleached sand directly behind the hotel.

Rooms are a mix of modern and traditional, with a minimalist vibe, wooden accents, and pops of color from Mexican textiles. La Zebra has only 15 rooms, which means this property offers a truly intimate experience. Ground-level rooms have plunge pools, while those on higher floors have balconies.

The restaurant is one of the resort's selling points, specifically for its dinners, which are always romantic. Guests can book a Chef's Table with Chef Eleazar Bonilla, who creates an eight-course tasting menu.

Of the three categories, the Master Suite is the highest. These indulgent rooms feature a king-sized bed, a terrace with Caribbean Sea views, and a private hot tub. The on-site restaurant is a little slice of Thailand in southern Mexico, led by Chef Garn Surasak, a Thai native. A casual beach menu is also on hand if you want something a bit more local.

Mezzanine is also all about wellness – it is Tulum, after all. The wellness center features a menu of treatments that can be arranged with the hotel's concierge team. Colibri Boutique Hotels are known for their experiences, and guests of Mezzanine can choose from exploring the nature parks to fishing, bird-watching, cooking classes, and much more.

Be Tulum's Yaan Wellness Spa offers a menu of body treatments, detox programs, cleanses, and herbal bath rituals, as well as sauna, steam, and therapy pools.

Barefoot, boho luxury comes alive beyond the doors of Casa Malca. The Design Hotel designation means that it is a particularly good example of stunning architecture and savvy style.

The hotel features 71 rooms that sit along a pristine stretch of powder-soft sand. Each room and space of the hotel is the vision of Lio Malca, an artist who has showcased his work at museums like the Whitney Museum in New York.

His space is much more than a hotel - it's a work of art in itself. Rooms are sleek and polished, with bright and colorful accents, like dramatic drapes, colorful rugs, or brightly colored accent art pieces. The room to beat is the Master Suite Beach Front, with its own private terrace and direct access to the beach.

In addition to the rooms, the hotel has three pools and a restaurant that serves locally influenced cuisine.

Not to be missed is the rooftop, which has 360-degree views of Tulum.

Twenty-six rooms of eco-chic beachfront luxury await when you book a stay at the Ahau Hotel. Made almost entirely from locally sourced materials, the resort raises the bar on the boho vibe. Picture Bali-style huts perched right on the sugary white shores of Tulum.

All the cabanas and huts are designed with the environment in mind, meaning some rooms do not have air-conditioning. Still, the decor, services, and overall vibe embody the Tulum experience that travelers come looking for. The Master Suite Ocean Front Beach Level rooms, for example, are the top-level suites and feature vaulted ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, an outdoor daybed, dining area, and beachfront views.

The resort does not have a pool, but with its location right in front of the turquoise Caribbean Sea, guests are never very far from a place to cool off. The hotel has four dining venues, including a signature restaurant, beach grill, Latin American restaurant, and a café serving fresh-pressed juices.

The resort is intimate, with only 19 rooms, each decorated simply with a white color palette and turquoise-colored accents. A private beach area is in front of the Tulum Beach House and La Casa sections of the hotel, where guests will find lounge chairs and thatched umbrellas. A small pool is on the property, tucked amid a mangrove garden.

Accommodation: Nomade Tulum

A slice of Morocco comes to the shores of Tulum with this eccentric boutique hotel. Nomade is heavy on the oasis vibes, with low tables, carpets, cushions, and an "elevated bazaar" vibe.

In keeping with Tulum's eco-conscious essence, the buildings use natural materials incorporated into the design, with palapa-style roofs and organic food. In fact, one restaurant, Macondo, is entirely vegan. The other, La Popular, is a beach grill.

The 51 rooms all feature different styles, from luxe-forward oceanfront suites to air-conditioned tents and swanky treehouses. A curated list of experiences adds to a stay, like a traditional temazcal to cacao ceremonies, Kundalini yoga, and breath workshops.

Nomade sets itself apart as being a haven for musicians as well, with a roster of international and local DJs and artists who come to the hotel to perform throughout the year.

Heavy on the New Age vibes, with meditative music and amenities like a "Gratitude Tent," this is the perfect type of hotel for the Burning Man crowd - but those with a little bit of money to burn.

12. NEST Tulum

Accommodation: NEST Tulum

Twelve simple rooms (and one luxe villa) bring an elevated level of eco-luxury to the shores of Tulum with Nest Tulum. Minimalist in design and culture, NEST uses natural, simple elements to tell the story of Tulum's evolution, from a bohemian backpacker town to an eco-luxe retreat.

The beachfront villa is the real show-stopper here, with four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen, palapa terrace, gardens, a patio, and amenities like breakfast and 24-hour concierge.

NEST's premier dining experience is NU, which is a fusion of modern and traditional Mexican cuisine. There is also a beachfront restaurant that serves more casual beach fare.

One of the best parts about NEST is that much of the design elements are locally sourced, from reclaimed wood furniture from woodworkers in nearby Coba to antique touches from San Miguel de Allende and embroidered textiles from Merida and Oaxaca. The hotel is entirely solar-powered as well, with a generator backup.

Breakfast is included, which is a nice perk in this often-pricey part of town.

Accommodation: Cabañas Tulum Hotel

Laid-back and beachfront. Cabanas Tulum manages to retain the spirit of what Tulum was like before it splashed the pages of luxury magazines. With strong Robinson Crusoe vibes, the small, open-air reception building is marked with chalkboards, string-backed beach chairs, and surrounded by blooming foliage. Each detail about the hotel screams "deserted tropical isle," but with an elevated edge.

Sixteen rooms round out the property, with poured concrete floors, white walls, and wooden accents. Guests can choose from either Beach Front or Swim Up Rooms, but if you're looking to splurge, there is the three-bedroom Loft Vanilla, complete with breakfast, a furnished terrace, and private hot tub.

Cabanas Tulum enjoys a perfect location along the southern end of the Hotel Zone, making it within walking distance of restaurants, boutiques, and beach clubs. It's about 20 minutes from Tulum town, and not far from the Sian Ka'an Biosphere.
