San Diego's Sprawling Park Is A Must-Visit Gem Full Of Gardens, Museums, And Family Fun
If you're looking for a winter escape, or you're dreaming of a seaside town with outdoor activities in the summer, San Diego is a fantastic choice. It has world-renowned beaches, nice weather all year long, and plenty of places to explore. One of those places is a sprawling park full of gardens, museums, and tons of opportunities for family fun, including the San Diego Zoo. Balboa Park covers 1,200 acres and contains an incredible 17 museums and cultural institutions. It's also open all day and night, so you can take an evening stroll or admire the sunset after a day of play. It's been around for more than 100 years and sits as a gem in the crown of the Southern California city. The park also hosts concerts, exhibitions, and seasonal events throughout the year. You can keep an eye on all the upcoming events here.
The park is a center for the performing arts, with numerous venues to check out. The Old Globe, which is based on William Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, features plays, including Shakespeare productions, and musicals. Little ones can check out the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater for shows and programs. You can also visit the Spreckels Organ Pavilion to see the largest outdoor pipe organ in the world and watch free organ concerts.

With so many museums in the park, you have endless options for educational entertainment. The Japanese Friendship Garden and Museum gives you a look into Japanese culture, with beautiful paths to wander, koi ponds, architecture, and programs to check out. The San Diego Natural History Museum, aka "The Nat," teaches kids about the natural world through exhibits and science displays, with rooftop views available on Friday nights. The San Diego Air & Space Museum covers the history of aviation from the beginning through the space age, with planes, spacecraft replicas, and more. Of course, pop culture and geekdom fans know that San Diego is the home of Comic-Con, and the Comic-Con Museum has all sorts of geeky collections of comics, replicas, and exhibits for your inner nerd. You can take a spin on the 1910 Dorothea Laub Balboa Park Carousel and try to get the brass ring, or ride the Miniature Train through four acres on weekends and holidays. The landmark of the park, the elaborately decorated California Tower, has tours, and the El Cid statue is the perfect spot for family photos.
If you have the whole family along, however, you have to visit the star of Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo. This world-famous animal haven isn't just about seeing the creatures that inhabit it. There are presentations, bus tours, self-guided botanical tours, play areas, and the Skyfari Aerial Tram. There are also upgraded experiences, including the Early Morning with Pandas Walking Tour for ages 5 and older and the all-ages Elite Adventure.
