Michigan's Largest Artificial Lake Is An Outdoor Recreation Haven With A Scenic State Park
If you're someone who loves the water and wants to plan a Michigan vacation, you may assume that all the best options are either on Lake Michigan or Lake Huron. After all, Lake Huron is where you'll find the gorgeous tourist destination offering a serene escape of outdoor fun, Mackinac Island. But while the Great Lakes are certainly worth visiting, you can actually combine both a Great Lake and the state's largest artificial lake into a single trip. Stretching for over 12 miles and spanning over 5,000 acres, Hamlin Lake is impressive on its own. However, what makes it even more notable and travel-worthy is that it sits next to Lake Michigan, giving you the best of both worlds.
Better yet, Hamlin Lake is situated next to one of the eight beautiful beach towns to visit along Lake Michigan, Ludington. But even then, the area isn't overly crowded like other parts of the state, so you can really relax and enjoy the water and shoreline of either lake. Plus, there's Ludington State Park in between them, providing access to beaches, hiking trails, scenic dunes, and even a lighthouse.
So, if you're looking to escape to Michigan to explore more of its natural scenery and lakeside activities without fighting crowds of tourists, Hamlin Lake might be the ticket. Bring your swimming gear and a boat (if you have one) and let's dive in!
Exploring the outdoor recreation haven of Hamlin Lake, Michigan
Since we're talking about visiting a lake, there are three main activities that can make your trip worthwhile: swimming, boating, and fishing. Fortunately, there are plenty of opportunities for all three. Interestingly enough, Hamlin Lake Beach at Ludington State Park was voted the third-best lake beach in America for 2026 by USA Today. Here you'll find calm, warm waters and fewer crowds compared to other beaches in the area. Best of all, it's only about a 20-minute walk across the park to the Lake Michigan side, so you can move between beaches easily without having to get the car all sandy.
When it comes to boating, both motorboats and paddlecraft are allowed, although if you're planning to bring a motorized craft, you must abide by local regulations. For example, you must register your boat with the Michigan Department of State. Paddlecraft like canoes or kayaks are exempt, making it much easier to navigate the waters. There are public boat ramps at multiple parks around the lake, or if you stay at a resort along the shoreline, many of them have marinas or boat launches for added convenience. We should also note that while Hamlin Lake and Lake Michigan are technically connected by the Big Sable River, the Hamlin Dam prevents boats from going through.
Finally, fishing is a popular activity all year round, even during Michigan's harsh winter. Since most of the lake freezes over, you can ice fish during the coldest months or cast a line from your boat the rest of the year. Common species include walleye, bass, perch, bluegill, and more. A map from Visit Ludington outlines the different lake zones and what you can expect to catch.
Making the most of a Michigan lake trip
A convenient travel hub for Hamlin Lake is the Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, which is about 2 hours south of the lake. If you're really trying to plan an epic Michigan lakeside vacation, you can stop at the gorgeous city on the shores of Lake Michigan, Grand Haven, as a side trip on your way to Hamlin Lake.
As we mentioned, there are several resorts along the lake's shoreline, providing easier access to the water. If you're trying to explore Ludington State Park, you may want to stay at Hobby Crest or Peaceful Acres Resort, as they are close to the park. Or, the park does have campgrounds and cabin rentals, so you can simply stay on-site and experience as much of the area's natural beauty as possible. Alternatively, you can get a hotel in nearby Ludington if you want more convenient access to amenities.
While the beaches and the lake itself are more than enough reason to visit Hamlin Lake, there's even more to do at Ludington State Park. There are over 21 miles of trails available, allowing you to experience various highlights, such as the Big Sable Point Lighthouse, which you can climb up for epic views of Lake Michigan. Or, if you really want to feel like a wilderness explorer, you can take the Lost Lake and Island Trail, a 2-mile loop that takes you over the water and through an island just offshore.
