When it comes to theme parks, most people picture either Southern California or Orlando, thanks to the presence of powerhouses like Disneyland and Universal Studios. However, it turns out that the northern Eastern Seaboard is a worthy challenger, with spots like America's best amusement park of 2026, Knoebels in Elysburg, Pennsylvania. Then there's a former amusement park that has transformed into a modern public park, complete with art galleries, live events, an aquarium, and its original carousel. In this case, we're talking about Glen Echo Park in Glen Echo, Maryland.

Situated next to the Potomac River, Glen Echo used to be the premier entertainment destination of the region during its heyday. However, even though it's no longer an amusement park, the area is full of attractions and activities for the whole family. In fact, there's so much to do that it's best to take a whole weekend (or longer) to experience it all. So, if you're looking for old-school fun and want to explore a true hidden gem, uncover what makes Glen Echo Park such a remarkable destination.

Exploring Glen Echo Park's past and present

Glen Echo Park's story began in 1891, when it was created as the National Chautauqua Assembly, a place where people could learn about different subjects including science and the arts. This proved unpopular, and by the 1900s, the area had transformed into an amusement park, which lasted until 1968, when the park closed. Importantly, Glen Echo was a central part of the fight for civil rights, as local activists protested against segregation by riding the park's carousel, which was illegal at the time. The carousel, built in 1921, still exists today, making it one of the only antique carousels still in operation.

Now, Glen Echo Park's story combines its educational and entertainment history. On the amusement side, guests can enjoy the carousel, see a show at the children's theater, or dance at the historic Spanish Ballroom, which also hosts various live events throughout the summer. On the education side, you can book an appointment at the aquarium to learn about sea life, take a creative class (such as glass blowing or puppetry), or visit one of the art galleries. In fact, the park is all about supporting local artists, with shows, public discussions, and an online art market.

Finally, on top of all of this, the park is next to Cabin John Island in the Potomac River, which is accessible via a trail. So, when you need a break from activities and learning, you can go for a walk and marvel at the natural scenery of the area.

Adding Glen Echo Park to your Maryland vacation

Glen Echo Park is under 10 miles from Washington, D.C., home to one of the 10 most iconic landmarks in the U.S. to visit: the National Mall. This also means that the closest major travel hub is Dulles International Airport (IAD), which is approximately 20 miles away. However, because of traffic, keep in mind that it often takes longer to get into Maryland than it does to leave. So, while it's about a 20-minute drive from the park to the airport, it may take an hour in the opposite direction. It's best to look at real-time traffic updates and plan accordingly.

When it comes to accommodations, there are quite a few chain hotel options in nearby Bethesda, Maryland. Or, you can stay at The Oaks Bed & Breakfast in Cabin John just to the north of the park. There are also a few vacation rentals near Glen Echo if the park is the main focus of your trip. Otherwise, you can explore other parts of the region, such as Alexandria, Virginia's historic city along the Potomac River.

As you might imagine, most of the activity at Glen Echo Park happens during the summer, such as concerts and other live events. Even the carousel only operates from May to the end of September, so it's best to visit when everything is open. That said, keep in mind that the area can get pretty hot and muggy during this season, so be prepared. Finally, there is limited food on site, such as the Irish Inn, which specializes in traditional Irish cuisine. There's also the Praline Bakery, which serves sandwiches, salads, and various baked goods for dessert.
