Usually, when a place adopts a moniker, such as the "X capital of Y," it's an unofficial title, often used as a marketing gimmick to get people to visit. However, in Texas, they take their nicknames and titles seriously. For example, Lockhart was officially recognized as the "Barbecue Capital of Texas" by the state legislature in 2003. But if you're more of an outdoorsy person, you may be more interested in the official "Outdoor Capital of Texas," aka Buda.

Located about half an hour south of Austin and an hour north of San Antonio, Buda earned its title for its abundance of parks and green spaces. In fact, it has more per capita than any other city in the state. There are 13 parks throughout the city, so it's easy to get your steps in and enjoy the fresh air.

But even if you're not a very active person, there are other reasons to add Buda to your Texas travel list. It's home to a bevy of restaurants and various other attractions, including a live music venue, a drive-in movie theater, and a pinball arcade. Here's what the city has to offer.

What makes Buda Texas' outdoor capital

With 13 parks to choose from, you have plenty of options available during your visit. However, the most popular park is arguably the historic Stagecoach Park on the northern edge of town. Sitting on 51 acres of land, this park houses multiple historic structures, a playground, a fishing pond, an outdoor amphitheater, and a dog park, just in case you plan to bring Fido along. Stagecoach is also the home of the annual Buda Holiday Lights Festival, featuring light displays, food vendors, and various entertainment options. It doesn't quite make the list of the USA's 10 best December tourist attractions for a winter getaway, but that doesn't mean it lacks some real small-town charm.

If you're more into fishing, head south to Bradfield Village Park, which has two fishing ponds, one of which is stocked regularly by the city. For more live music and concerts, check out the Buda Amphitheater and City Park, which hosts events throughout the year. This park is also where you can find the Budaful Farmers Market, which takes place every Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm and helps you connect with local farmers and buy fresh produce, meats, and other handmade products. There's even a splash pad for the little ones to stay cool when the weather gets hot.

Finally, if you're more athletic and competitive, head to the Sportsplex, the newest park in the Buda parks system. This spot has sports fields, a playground, and hiking and running trails. Alternatively, for indoor sports, you can reserve a spot at the Sunfield Station, where you can play pickleball, basketball, and volleyball, or just use the fitness center.

Making your way to Buda

Since Austin is so close, the easiest way to reach Buda is to fly into the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, which is only about 25 minutes northeast. In town, there's a cluster of mostly chain hotels around I-35, which cuts through the center of the city. There are also quite a few vacation rentals in and around Buda, giving you more flexibility with how you plan your stay. The other advantage of staying in Buda is that you're close to other great small towns, like Wimberley, a hidden city with pristine swimming holes, which is only half an hour west. But if you're really into swimming and water sports, head south to New Braunfels, home to one of the coolest waterparks in the US: Schlitterbahn.

Another attraction is Buck's Backyard, a rustic-style music venue that sells food and has pickleball courts so you can play after you eat. Or, for a more old-school experience, head to Doc's Drive-In and catch a movie from the comfort of your car. For more family fun, Pinballz Kingdom has a bunch of retro arcade games, an escape room, and tasty eats.

Speaking of eating, Buda has plenty of great restaurants that cater to all ages. For a blend of history and modern amenities, Willie's Joint serves beer, Tex-Mex, and burgers. If you really want good Tex-Mex, head over to Los Agaves Taco Bar and enjoy fresh tacos and authentic tequila. Finally, since you're in central Texas, you can grab some mouthwatering barbecue at Louie's Craft BBQ, a food truck serving all the hits, including brisket, pulled pork, and house-made sausages.
