One Of America's Cleanest Lakes Is A Southern Beauty For Fishing, Swimming, And Water Sports
When you think of a day on a crystal-clear blue lake, you may picture a trip to Oregon or Colorado. However, one of the cleanest lakes in the country is found in Alabama — the state's Lake Martin ranked third in Lake.com's 2026 analysis of the cleanest large lakes in the country, behind only Lake Chelan in Washington and Lake Superior, the cleanest lake in America last year. That's notable in a state that with just one natural lake, Lake Jackson, which straddles the Florida line. Across Alabama, engineers used rivers and streams to create dozens of artificial lakes and reservoirs. Lake Martin is one of them, and it's a great place to unwind with a rod and reel (or a drink) in hand. Its serene scene and reputation for carefree days have given the lake the nickname "Alabama's living room."
Lake Martin came to life a century ago when Alabama Power finished constructing the Martin Dam on the Tallapoosa River to provide electricity for the state, creating what was then the world's largest artificial lake. The dam still generates hydroelectric power today. Lake.com's 2026 report gave Lake Martin a composite pollution score of 0.53 out of 10, with lower scores indicating cleaner water. The lake's clear, welcoming environment makes it one of the best spots to spend a day on the water in the region and a popular gathering spot for locals from Birmingham and Montgomery, as well as second-home buyers. Visitors can fish, swim, tube, or just cruise around.
A fun day on the water at Lake Martin
The calm waters of Lake Martin are surrounded by a beautiful natural showpiece of rocky, tree-lined shores and coves tucked into the lake's outstretched arms. The lake has 880 miles of shoreline dotted with marinas and public boat ramps. Note, though, that much of the shoreline is residential and privately owned. If you are looking to rent a boat for a day of skiing or fishing, Southern Boat Rentals or Smith Marina have been praised by reviewers on Google for their service, prices, and watercraft.
While you can slide into the crystal-clear water off a pontoon, some swimmers may want to splash closer to shore. Travelers seeking a base on land for a day on the water can head to Centennial Park (formerly D.A.R.E. Power Park) or Wind Creek State Park. Centennial Park has a white-sand beach and a picnic area with barbecues for a self-catered afternoon. Wind Creek has major amenities, including a marina, while canoes, kayaks, and paddle boats are available to rent. You'll find fun on land, too: The state park boasts a zip line course and miles of hiking trails.
For camping enthusiasts, Wind Creek State Park has one of the largest state-run campgrounds in the country, with all 586 sites having water and electricity. Travelers who want quiet lakeside mornings with their coffee can choose from 157 spots overlooking the lake. Weekend reservations must be for at least two nights, and three nights over a holiday weekend. If you are camping, don't forget these camping essentials.
Planning a fishing trip to Lake Martin
Lake Martin's clear water is a boon for swimmers. For anglers, though, that clear water comes with relatively low fertility. Still, you can find crappie and hard-fighting bass, though the lake's bass are generally smaller than those caught in more fertile Alabama reservoirs. When bass fishing on Lake Martin, it's recommended to use smaller lures. For some of the best spots, fish the Coley Creek and Elkahatchee Creek areas, as they are more fertile. Or, get the scoop and spend a day fishing on a fully guided trip. The best times to fish on the lake are during the spring and fall, when the weather is cooler and the fish are more active. Wind Creek State Park also hosts many of the lake's fishing tournaments, so it's worth checking the event calendar before the trip.
For travelers coming to kick back and relax on Lake Martin from outside of the area, Montgomery Regional Airport (MGM) is the closest commercial airport and is within an hour of the lake. Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) is roughly 1.5 to two hours away, while Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is about two to 2.5 hours away. Overall, Alabama is full of surprising destinations. If you're extending your Alabama trip south to the Gulf Coast, consider visiting Perdido Key, a barrier island with stunning Caribbean-like beaches.
