Between LA And San Diego Lies A Charming Beach City For Laid-Back Coastal Fun
One of the best reasons to add California to your travel list is its abundance of incredible and scenic beach cities. While the entire state has an impressive coastline, Southern California offers many of the best options. For example, here you can find Solana Beach, a beach town ideal for laid-back summer fun, or Vista, a small city with nearby beaches and family activities. However, in between these spots is yet another worthwhile destination: Encinitas.
Even though this city is surrounded by incredible places, it offers some of the best shoreline in the region, as well as vibrant natural areas, such as the San Diego Botanic Garden. Overall, if you love chilling on the beach, hiking through wilderness, or eating tasty Southern California cuisine, Encinitas is a great travel option. Plus, it's close enough to other world-class attractions like Legoland and the San Diego Zoo to make it an ideal base camp for exploring the area. So, let's put on our beach attire and see what Encinitas has in store.
Experiencing the coastal beauty of Encinitas, California
Since Encinitas is a coastal city, one of its primary attractions is its 45 acres of beaches. The most popular option is Moonlight Beach, which offers the most amenities and is the easiest to get to. Not only is this beach ADA accessible, but you can also find tennis courts, volleyball courts, a playground, restrooms, showers, and even a concession stand. Most other beaches in the city (except Swami's Beach) don't have bathrooms, so you should plan accordingly if you're adding them to your itinerary.
In addition to the beaches managed by the city, Encinitas is also home to multiple state beaches on its southern edge. Both San Elijo and Cardiff State Beaches are great for swimming, snorkeling, beachcombing, and surfing. However, because they're managed by the state, you'll have to pay the day pass fee, which can range from $8 to $25, depending on demand and the time of year. As you head further inland, you can also explore the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve, which is ideal for birdwatching, wildlife viewing, and hiking. One of the more notable hikes is along the Annie's Canyon Trail, which takes you through a narrow slot canyon. There is also a nature center with interactive exhibits so you can learn more about the local flora and fauna.
If you're really trying to explore nature, though, plan a visit to the San Diego Botanic Garden. Spanning 37 acres, this garden offers 4 miles of walking trails, where you can see over 5,000 plant species spread out over 29 different gardens. Wander through at your leisure or take a guided tour. You can also sign up for open-air yoga classes if you want to stretch your limbs on vacation.
Making the most of a trip to Encinitas
When traveling to Encinitas, the closest hub is San Diego, meaning you can easily fly into one of the world's most beautiful airports of 2026 and drive about 27 miles north. The only other alternative is LAX, which is about two hours away. Once you're in town, there are a number of hotels throughout the city, including the luxurious Cardiff by the Sea Lodge, which overlooks the ocean and offers upscale amenities. But if you want to be close to the beach, there are many vacation rentals either on or next to the shoreline.
After a day on the beach, you have plenty of options for delicious dining. If you're hanging out by Grandview Beach, stop into Fish 101, a cozy spot with a focus on healthy seafood-based fare. Or, if you're further south at Swami's Beach, check out Union Kitchen and Tap, featuring a diverse menu and eclectic beer and wine list. For traditional Mexican favorites in a bright, cheery setting, head over to Casa de Bandini and enjoy tasty food, cocktails, and live mariachi bands.
Finally, as we mentioned, another reason to visit Encinitas is that it's close to multiple world-class attractions. Legoland California is only 10 miles up the coast and Balboa Park, home of the San Diego Zoo and various other museums, is only about 30 minutes south. So, depending on how long your vacation is, you can experience practically everything Southern California has to offer while avoiding crowds and enjoying local pristine beaches and green spaces.
