President Trump Announced A Huge $22.5B Airport Renovation Over The Next 10 Years

When its iconic (and revolutionary) terminal building was completed in 1962, Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), named after Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, was a model airport for the United States. But over the next decade, beginning in 2027, the airport is set to undergo a major transformation and modernization, as President Donald Trump announced a $22.5 billion upgrade for the Washington area's main international gateway on July 29, 2026. In total, the project will revamp over 5 million square feet of space and modernize the existing layout, including parking, check-in counters, security areas, and departure lounges. For arriving passengers, retrieving luggage and passing through customs when arriving from abroad will become more modern and streamlined as well, according to a press release.

The 10-year project will be completed in five major phases, and travelers can expect major changes when passing through the airport. In 2027, the airport will begin overhauling Concourses A and B, adding a walkway and more international gates. The existing C and D gates, constructed in the mid-1980s, will be completely rebuilt with newer food options and will incorporate a more airy, open design compared to the existing structure. Travel across the airport is also being streamlined. To many travelers' delight (or chagrin), the iconic "people mover" buses will be removed as the entire airport becomes more walkable. According to official project renderings and The Associated Press, it appears the overhauled airport will have a single underground corridor as a backbone and a U-shaped train line connecting all concourses. The airport's landmark terminal building, which has inspired other major airport terminals, including Taipei Taoyuan Airport, won't be going anywhere.

Over the last decades, significant passenger growth at Washington Dulles has led to, in President Donald Trump's own words, "a major and long overdue renovation and reconstruction of Washington's really horribly thought-of Dulles," per Reuters. Since 2016, annual passenger traffic at the airport has jumped from about 22 million to over 29 million in 2025, along with a major boost in international flight connections — Dulles has far more international airlines than domestic carriers, and over a third of passengers departing from the airport are going abroad. The airport has non-stop flights to Asia; Latin America; and European and African destinations on the Mediterranean, including Greece, Morocco, Italy, and Turkey. United, the largest airline at Washington Dulles, also plans to expand its presence at the airport, adding more international routes, a new United Polaris Lounge, and more premium cabin seating to meet passenger demand. In the future, you may be able to take United's Relax Row, a new convertible seat option on long-haul United flights out of Dulles.

Before President Trump's announcement, Washington Dulles had already begun to modernize its aging facilities. The airport is upgrading Concourse E, which is slated to open later this year, and has added several swanky airport lounges similar to these high-end airport lounges worth the splurge. Another major recent upgrade has been the connection to Washington's metro network: Dulles International Airport is on the Silver Line, which launched six new stations in 2022.
