America's Worst Airline Overall In 2026 Is Also The Largest By Far

Air travel can be problematic at the best of times, whether you're dealing a flight delay or cancellation, lost baggage, or any number of other issues. While there isn't much we as travelers can do to fix things that are out of our control, it's important to know which airlines have the best chance of getting us to our destination in good shape and on time. To that end, Travel Pirates posted a ranking of the worst airlines in America based on the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) data for 2025 and from January through May 2026 for cancellations, delays, baggage issues, complaints, and passengers being bumped, as well as customer satisfaction scores from J.D. Power. The publication notes that Spirit Airlines, the major U.S. budget airline that recently shut down, wasn't included in this ranking. As it turns out, the enormous carrier American Airlines has the lowest rating as of mid-July 2026.

According to the publication's rankings, United Airlines is the best of the worst, followed by Allegiant Air, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue, and, of course, American Airlines. In a thread on Reddit's r/americanairlines from a year ago, commenters say that while it's easy to get status upgrades and loyalty points at American, they've also had issues with delays and inconsistency with service. However, some commenters mention that it's the main airline at the airport closest to where they live. That makes sense, as, according to the website OAG, American Airlines is the largest U.S. airline in 2026, with 160.5 million seats, over 20 million more than the next largest, Delta Air Lines. 

Travel Pirates put American Airlines at the top of its worst U.S. airlines list for 2026 because it has the worst stats overall from the data set used. For 2025, the airline had the highest rate of cancelled flights at 2.36%. While that may seem low, consider that this is out of 2.3 million flights that year. Additionally, only 73.5% of the carrier's 2025 flights arrived within 15 minutes of their scheduled time, and 75.2% arrived on time from January to May 2026. American was only beaten by United for lost bags in 2025, and it had the most customer complaints in May 2026.

However, all of that said, not all passengers choose flights because of rankings. Sometimes, it's about loyalty points on a credit card, the right time and date of the flights, open seats, and how many flights are available to their desired destination. American Airlines also has the most domestic routes for summer 2026 at 907 and the second-most international routes at 306, following United Airlines' 334. Finally, while it's good to know which airline had the worst recent record for on-time departures if you're planning a trip, it's also important to consider which airports you're flying through. Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) was the worst for flight delays (where American Airlines is based), while the underrated Salt Lake City International Airport was ranked as the best for on-time departures.
