This Artsy California City Is A Hidden Gem With Scenic Vineyards And Wineries

Central California has beauty to spare, with lots of charming towns to visit, from Cambria to Carmel-by-the-Sea. However, if you're looking for a peaceful and artsy spot to enjoy some wine in a beautiful vineyard, or the simple pleasures of a drive-in movie theater, San Luis Obispo is the perfect hidden gem. Around 3.5 hours northwest of Los Angeles by car, the city is full of things to do. You can go hiking in the hills, explore a centuries-old mission, or shop at the San Luis Obispo Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings. If you visit on the first Friday of each month, you can experience the Art After Dark event, with galleries, boutiques, and other spots showing off the work of local creatives alongside live music. Even if you aren't in town for the Friday festivities, there are plenty of galleries worth visiting, such as Hands Gallery, featuring handmade crafts, jewelry, soaps, candles, and gifts.

The closest airport is San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport (SBP), which is only 3 miles from the town center. However, if you're looking for a larger airport, it's 145 miles to Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT). It may be worth it to rent a car because there are so many places nearby to visit, like Morro Bay, a small town on the water 13 miles away that boasts charming shops, or the stunning Hearst Castle, one of a number of great places to stop along the Pacific Coast Highway. Plus, if you have a designated driver, you can visit more area wineries and vineyards. However, if you don't want to drive, you can also take the scenic Pacific Surfliner train along the coast, which runs from San Diego to San Luis Obispo.

One place to stop for some wine tasting and pretty scenery is Chamisal Vineyards, around 10 minutes from downtown. It has a 4.7-out-of-five rating on Google Maps, with one reviewer saying, "Chamisal is one of the most gorgeous wineries on the Central Coast! AND .... the service is even better! ... Definitely a must go to winery!" The vineyard also received Tripadvisor's Travelers' Choice Award in 2025. It has its own tasting room and is open daily, or you can have an outdoor picnic on the property. There are a number of tasting options, so check the vineyard's website before booking.

Tolosa Winery is another spot in San Luis Obispo featuring sustainable wines that are SIP (Sustainability in Practice) certified. There are indoor and outdoor tasting areas, snack plates and charcuterie, and delicious wines to enjoy. If you join its wine club, the winery offers an upgraded weekend tasting experience in the Primera Room with pretty views of the vineyard. This winery has a 4.5-star rating on Google Maps.

If you just want to visit a tasting room without leaving downtown, you can hit Couch Family Wines' tasting room on Higuera Street, open Wednesday through Sunday evenings. The wine collection at the time of this writing has several cabernet sauvignon options, as well as pinot noir, chardonnay, and rosé. One reviewer on Yelp mentions that, while there isn't much food there, the owner allowed them to get a pizza from next door (at Woodstock's Pizza) and eat it along with the wine. 

If you're a seasoned hiker, you may want to take some time out of your winery schedule to try the 3.8-mile Bishop Peak Trail in Bishop Peak Natural Area. This isn't an easy one, with a 1,145-foot elevation gain, but there are lovely views, and you can bring your dog with you. There are multiple entrances, so make sure you know the route before you set out. If you want to try something completely different, you can take a social media pic in Bubblegum Alley, full of chewed gum on the walls. Maybe bring hand sanitizer if you decide to add to it. You can also check out the Sunset Drive-In for a retro experience. Note that you have to get tickets at the box office, and they only take cash.

History buffs should make a point to stop at Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. The mission is over two centuries old and features a museum with artifacts to explore. It's open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., though the mission itself is open every day. Admission is free, though donations are accepted. You can also take docent-led tours, but make sure to check tour hours first, as they're seasonal. 

If you decide to stay overnight, one really fun and kitschy place to lay your head is the Madonna Inn. This hotel is famous for its unique rooms, including one based on Bridalveil Falls in Yosemite National Park, one based on Austrian architecture, and the Madonna suite with wild pink carpet and rock walls. The next day, take a drive over to Sandspit Beach, one of the best hidden beaches in California, around 15 miles from San Luis Obispo.
