This Is One Of Europe's Cheapest Destinations Of 2026 Where The US Dollar Goes Further

The fact of the matter is that, in 2026, visiting Europe will cost more than you think. However, don't fret! There are still plenty of budget-friendly destinations in Europe where you'll have an incredible trip for much less, especially if you're willing to go slightly off the beaten path. As a bonus, visiting the lesser-traveled destinations is the best way to avoid Europe's biggest tourist traps, and therefore its biggest crowds. One such country that flies under many a radar but definitely shouldn't? Romania.

There are things you can do to spend less in Europe as a whole, like staying in budget accommodations and traveling in the off- or shoulder-seasons (usually late fall, early spring, and winter, depending on where you're going). However, destination does play a key role in affordability, which is where Romania comes in. Not only is Romania one of Europe's most affordable destinations for 2026, but it's also a gold mine of history, stunning scenery, charming cities, and rich culture. And although most people will think of vampires and castles when they think of Romania, the landscapes are quite diverse (although you'll definitely find some vampire lore and castles, too). You'll discover thick forests and astonishing mountains in Transylvania, Black Sea beaches, and the Danube Delta, along with modern cityscapes like Bucharest. As the average traveler in Romania only spends between $45 and $100 per day as of 2026, per Go Visit Romania, the U.S. dollar goes a long way. It's also easy to reach by plane from several other European cities via Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport. Here's how to make the most of your hard-earned coin as you explore this fascinating country.

Exploring Romania, from Bucharest to the Black Sea

It's been said before, but Romania truly does appeal to all kinds of travelers. Those hoping for a city break that won't empty their bank account should head to the capital, Bucharest. Known as the "Little Paris of the East" with its broad avenues and unique facades, budget travelers could spend as little as $37 a day in Bucharest, according to GoTripzi. Bucharest is also becoming known as a budget-friendly city for a spa getaway (and who doesn't need a spa weekend in 2026?). Packages, including saunas, massages, and treatments, start at $18 for a three-hour session. Beyond the spa, expect to spend around $12 to $45 for a sit-down meal, and a glass of beer or wine will cost less than $5. Public transportation in Bucharest, like in much of Europe, is easy, handy, and cheap — a 24-hour transit pass in Bucharest will set you back less than $2.

If you're hoping for more of a beach vacation, you may be tempted to pass right over Romania — but don't! Like neighboring Bulgaria, one of the world's most affordable countries in 2026, Romania's Black Sea beaches are lovely — and affordable. Approximately 2.5 hours southeast from Bucharest via train, the main hub of Constanta is surrounded by smaller beach resorts, like the famous Mamaia (5 miles north). For a smaller, family-oriented resort town, head south of Constanta to Eforie. Travelers should expect to spend at least $110 a day for mid-range hotels and attractions in this area, although prices can rise significantly during the high season (summer). Save some dough by heading to the Black Sea coast in early September, when there will be plenty of sun but fewer crowds.

Transylvania, the land beyond the forest

Some of Europe's most mythical landscapes can be found in Romania, especially in legendary Transylvania, or "the land beyond the forest." This storied region is home to some of Romania's most famous sites, such as Bran Castle, one of Europe's most spectacular fairytale castles. And, it turns out, this forested, mountainous region is still easy to do on a budget. To start with, the best way to explore Transylvania is by car, for better freedom to visit tiny towns and distant castles. However, this is generally quite budget-friendly as well, with rental car prices starting at just $5 per day (consider an upgrade to a four-wheel-drive vehicle if you're heading off the beaten track).

Among the main highlights of Transylvania are the cities of Brașov, Sibiu, and Sighișoara. Although you'll pay slightly more to stay in one of these more visited spots, you can still snag a decent hotel room for approximately $45 a night. Sighișoara, the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, Romania's most (in)famous prince, is generally visited on day trips. Stay the night to experience it all by yourself — the old town is enchantingly atmospheric at dusk. In addition, much of Transylvania's charm lies in the countryside, so consider a homestay or country inn, which will cost you much less (and provide you a front-row seat to local life).

Throughout Transylvania, many of the attractions are free or low-cost. The views, of course, cost nothing, but a visit to Bran Castle will set you back approximately $21. Another famous castle, Peles, featured in Netflix's "A Christmas Prince," will cost you about $21 as well, although the spectacular grounds are free. The colorful, ancient streets in such cities as Sibiu are a site themselves — and also free to roam.
