The Largest Water Park In Illinois Offers Tons Of Family Fun Every Day This Summer

Illinois is home to several major tourist attractions that first-time visitors will love, but water-based destinations aren't what usually come to mind. Thankfully, those craving H2O-filled family fun can find it at one mega-sized water park open all summer. Raging Waves is just a one-hour drive from the bustling streets of Chicago, and while the green fields surrounding it won't make you feel as though you've been transported to the beaches of Florida, its water slides, wave pool, and other attractions are a satisfying enough stand-in once school's out for the summer.

Situated in Yorkville, Raging Waves spans over 50 acres, making it the largest water park in the Prairie State. There, you'll find over 40 attractions, many of which were designed with kids in mind. There are shallow swimming areas with easy-going slides and a wet playground for the smallest members of the family, along with sky-high water slides and fast-paced plunges for bigger kids. Thrill-seekers should especially look out for the 72-foot-tall PJ's Plummet slide and the Wonambi, a four-person raft ride down a 68-foot slide with loops and a nearly vertical wall.

Luckily, the adults in the family aren't left out. Cabanas are available to rent on the park's website one day before your visit, or on a first-come, first-served basis at the park. They come equipped with roofs for shade, seating and tables, and a server, who can keep the snacks and drinks flowing while you take it easy. There's also a lazy river that, starting in the 2026 season, will be heated to keep you comfortable on days when the temperatures dip.

Raging Waves is open until early September

Raging Waves kicks off its summer season in late May and is open every day through mid-August, when it will only operate on the weekends until early September. Park hours are generally between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., so you have plenty of time to squeeze in some fun in the sun. Look out for special events on the official events calendar when planning your trip, from group swimming lessons to "Foam Zone Fridays."

As of this writing, day tickets are available online for $55, while season passes are priced between $110 and $225 — a far cry from the free entry available at Knoebels amusement park in Pennsylvania. You must also pay for parking, unless you're an Elite or Platinum season passholder. Besides the prices, several reviewers on Tripadvisor have expressed frustration over Raging Waves' strict rules, including one rule that says all bags must be see-through and another that bans all outside food. To avoid disappointment, prepare to pack a clear or mesh bag and spend money at the on-site snack stands.

Raging Waves is situated west of Chicago and is easy to access via Interstate 88. Several other tourist attractions are located within driving distance, including Sugar Grove Family Fun Center, the kid-friendly Blackberry Farm, and Slick City Action Park. If you don't have a chance to visit Raging Waves during the summer season, don't worry — you can experience aquatic family fun even in the colder months at the coolest indoor water parks in the U.S.
