Australia's Biggest City Is Getting A Second International Airport In 2026
Travelers will soon have a new airport and many more flight options to choose from when visiting Australia. Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) is expected to welcome its first commercial passengers in October 2026. Cargo flights to and from the airport will take off in July.
The airport, which has been under construction since 2018, will launch its international flights with Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand, serving as a new gateway to New Zealand's best tourist destinations. The airport's leading domestic airlines are Jetstar and Qantas. Tickets are now available for purchase, according to WSI's website. Like Australia's seven other major international airports, WSI will provide travelers access to the nation's top scenic destinations.
Western Sydney's new airport is set to become a direct competitor to the existing Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD). Sydney's primary airport had its busiest year on record in 2025, with 42.54 million travelers passing through its gates. However, SYD has some operational limitations. Because of its urban location, flights are subject to a nightly curfew to reduce aircraft noise in the area. While there are some exceptions, most flights can only operate between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. WSI is located west of the metropolis, away from densely populated areas. It's not subject to a curfew, making it Sydney's only airport that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
New metro line will link Western Sydney International Airport to the city
Two major airports servicing one city is rare, but not unheard of. In fact, one of Florida's most popular cites could soon have a second major airport. The reason it can work in Sydney is because the location of the new airport is around 38 miles away from the city's central business district, and Sydney Airport is a mere 7 miles away.
If 30-plus miles seems like a long way to go from the city limits to catch a flight, you're right. Fortunately, the distance can be navigated easily. The new Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport railway will span over 14 miles, connecting the airport to Sydney's public transportation network, as well as various communities in Western Sydney. The metro line is set to open a year from now, in April 2027. Starting in July 2026, a new bus system will connect WSI to five of its surrounding communities. Free airport buses will also run between the airport and the St Mary's train and bus terminal.
Within its first years, WSI is set to serve 10 million passengers annually. Eventually, it could welcome upwards of 80 million passengers, and is poised to become the largest airport in Australia. This will certainly be a game-changer, both for Australians and for travelers around the world.
