California's Picturesque Lake In The Sierra Nevada Mountains Offers A Serene Nature Escape
Lake Tahoe may be considered one of California's top tourist hot spots, but it certainly isn't the only lake worth visiting in the state. Tucked into the Sierra National Forest at an elevation of 7,000 feet, Huntington Lake sits along the western edge of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California's Big Creek region. This area of Big Creek was first inhabited by Indigenous peoples and also attracted early pioneers who began to build what would later become one of the world's largest hydroelectric power systems. Today, it attracts nature lovers seeking a quiet getaway by the water.
Huntington Lake is one of six major lakes in Big Creek, and it's incredibly scenic. The lake is fed by a handful of smaller streams and melting snow from the surrounding mountains. The lake itself is roughly 7 miles wide and 1 mile long. It's a popular spot for water sports, such as fishing, swimming, water skiing, sailing, and kayaking. During winter, the China Peak Mountain Resort is a big draw for skiers and snowboarders, with slopes overlooking the lake. Plus, it's a mere two-hour drive to Yosemite, California's most famous national park.
The area is dotted with cabin rentals and campgrounds, offering affordable accommodations with easy access to the lake. Located less than two hours from Fresno by car — as well as Fresno Yosemite International Airport, which just got a major expansion – this destination makes for an easy day trip or weekend getaway. Although the neighboring Shaver Lake is a bit closer to Fresno, Huntington Lake is said to be less crowded, according to ABC 30. Before you go, check the current conditions on the U.S. Forest Service website, especially if you plan to visit in the winter, as there may be road closures due to snow.
Water sports and activities on Huntington Lake
There's no shortage of ways to get out on the water at Huntington Lake. On the eastern edge of the lake sits China Peak Landing and Rancheria Marina. Here, visitors can rent kayaks, paddle boards, and pontoon boats. It also offers beach access with on-site parking, a general store with some basic essentials, and a restaurant with a bar. Visitors can enjoy their food and drinks on the shaded terrace while looking out over the shimmering water of the lake. On occasion, you may also catch live music performances, boat shows, and other community events here.
Over the years, Huntington Lake has developed a reputation as one of the best sailing lakes on the West Coast. So, visitors will likely see sailboats here in the warmer months. For two weekends in July, spectators and sailing enthusiasts flock to Huntington Lake for the High Sierra Regatta, organized by the Fresno Yacht Club. Whether you're venturing onto the lake yourself or relaxing on the shore, head to the Huntington Boat Ramp & Launching Site. Located minutes down the road from China Peak Landing, it offers boating access to the lake, a small beach, and a picnic area with restrooms. On the western side of the lake, the Dowville Picnic Area and Billy Creek Trailhead offer fantastic views with picnic tables.
Explore the Huntington Lake area on foot
Lounging on the beach or at a picnic area is a fantastic way to spend time in Huntington Lake. However, you can also enjoy the lake from a different perspective by immersing yourself in the surrounding wilderness. Hikers are treated to stunning views of Huntington Lake from the summit of Black Butte, located just east of the lake. It's accessible on the Rancheria Falls National Trail, rated moderately challenging on AllTrails. This trail also passes by its namesake waterfall, Rancheria Falls, a stunning 150-foot cascade. To the falls, the journey is only 2 miles roundtrip, but the full trek to the peak is about 6.7 miles out and back. The falls are visible from June to October, and the stream is dependent on snowfall. Next to China Peak Mountain Resort, the Indian Pools Trail offers a moderately challenging trek alongside a river. According to AllTrails, the route is about 4.7 miles roundtrip, and the river is a refreshing spot for a dip in the summer.
Longer routes in the area attract hikers who want to explore deeper into the backcountry. For example, the Kaiser Loop Trail is a demanding 12-mile route used by both hikers and horseback riders. Along the way, the trail reveals sweeping views of Huntington Lake and the surrounding mountains. It is a strenuous trek that gains more than 3,700 feet in elevation, per AllTrails. This rugged adventure is a sharp contrast from the relaxing atmosphere down at the lake, giving visitors a chance to experience the best of both worlds.
The Nellie Lake Trail is another more difficult, 10-mile roundtrip hike that begins at Upper Billy Creek Campground, and goes north to a tiny lake nestled on a mountain. The route climbs roughly 2,300 feet in elevation. Most hikers take about three hours to reach the lake at a comfortable pace, and the return trip is usually faster at closer to two hours downhill, according to Sierra Nevada Geotourism. The Lakeshore Resort Saloon is the perfect watering hole to refuel after a big hike. Located in a terribly charming, rustic chalet near China Peak Landing, the bar and restaurant serves up breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as an assortment of drinks.
