Pennsylvania's Largest Theme Park Is Turning 120 – But Will It Open In Time For Summer?
Amusement park season is around the corner, but the reopening timeline of one iconic U.S. theme park remains up in the air. Hersheypark, the largest theme park in Pennsylvania, is celebrating 120 years in 2026. But a potential strike could impact its plans to open 7 days a week starting on May 21, 2026. According to Inside The Magic, negotiations have been taking place between Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Company (HE&R) and the union representing more than 200 maintenance staff members at the park, The Hotel Hershey, and the Giant Center. The union is reportedly demanding better pay and improved healthcare plans, among other things.
The union refused a proposal from HE&R on May 7, which the company described as its "last, best, and final" offer, reports Inside The Magic. A vote to strike is imminent, which could mean much fewer people on the ground to keep Hersheypark's rides, facilities, and other important infrastructure operational. Even the Giant Center, a massive entertainment venue near Hersheypark, could be impacted if the union contractors who set up for performances refuse to work during the strike. Members of the union include ride mechanics, electricians, welders, utilities technicians, plumbers, and many other skilled tradespeople, the report says. But despite the growing uncertainty surrounding its opening plans, Hersheypark remains optimistic.
HE&R says Hersheypark will open as scheduled
Like many theme parks, May marks the beginning of the busiest season at Hersheypark. The park has been opening on weekends since April 3, 2026, and will transition to an expanded schedule from May 21 to September 7. In addition to 15 roller coasters, the 121-acre park is also home to family-friendly rides, The Boardwalk waterpark, a zoo, and several resorts, including the new 130-room Hershey Inn & Suites. Even with a vote to strike set for this week, per Inside The Magic, Hersheypark plans to go full steam ahead with opening on May 21.
"Hersheypark is preparing to open for the 2026 summer season as scheduled on May 21," said HE&R representatives to ABC27 News. "We have been in discussions with union leadership about a time to reconvene for further discussion," the statement continues. "We value our long standing relationship with our union-represented team members and remain committed to the bargaining process. We are not going to speculate on outcomes, but we can confirm that our opening plans are proceeding on schedule."
In addition to Hersheypark, many other theme parks in the United States are preparing for busy seasons ahead. The new Universal Kids Resort is set to open in Texas this year, and Walt Disney World Resort remains one of the U.S.'s most iconic destinations worth visiting at least once. Even older than Hersheypark is Connecticut's Lake Compounce, America's oldest amusement park at 180 years old.
