5 Charming Towns In Illinois For A Romantic Weekend Getaway

Dreaming of a romantic getaway with your special someone? You don't need to head to an island in the Caribbean or to a secluded mountain cabin to find romance — it can often be found right in your backyard. Even in oft-overlooked destinations in the Midwest, you'll find plenty of hidden romantic gems. Illinois is a perfect example. Its mix of quaint historic towns combine with rolling hills and scenic nature to offer a perfect escape for couples looking to reconnect.

Small towns are always a safe bet when looking for romance, and luckily, Illinois has dozens of charming little communities across the state, including some of the state's friendliest towns to visit. Of course, not all small towns are created equal, which is why we consulted blogs, Illinois tourism boards, town websites, and other travel publications to compile this list of five romantic Illinois towns. From riverside escapes to charming towns that feel stuck in time, from getaways near Chicago to hamlets surrounded by forest or vineyards, we've got you covered for your romantic weekend trip in Illinois.

Galena

The 19th-century town of Galena is an overlooked gem that offers plenty of tourist attractions. It's a favorite for couples throughout Illinois and beyond. The town is situated along the famous Great River Road, which is a byway that follows the Mississippi River through small communities and other points of interest. Galena is known for its historical buildings — all of Main Street is designated on the National Register of Historic Places, and a grand 62% of Galena's buildings are part of historic districts.

The very fabric of the town is tailor-made for a romantic getaway. Couples can explore Main Street and charming church steeples while they check out the storefronts that hold antique shops, speciality restaurants, and delectable bakeries. Embrace those 19th-century romance vibes with a ride on the charmingly red Galena Trolleys, ideal for cuddling your sweetie as you learn more of Galena's history and pass by important buildings like Grant's Home, the former house of President Ulysses S. Grant and now a museum.

Galena is approximately three hours northwest of Chicago, although visitors can also fly into Madison, Wisconsin (two hours from Galena) or Cedar Rapids, Iowa (1.5 hours). It's best to have a car to reach Galena and explore the surrounding area, but the center of town is very walkable. For ultimate walkability, stay in the Aldrich Guest House, which is a bed and breakfast housed in one of Galena's famous Victorian-style buildings situated right in downtown.

Grafton

The lovely town of Grafton, Illinois, is all about its riverfront, as it sits at the point where two rivers converge: the Illinois and the mighty Mississippi. The riverfront is ideal for a romantic stroll, with a pretty little (non-working) lighthouse and even a floating oyster bar aptly called Grafton Oyster Bar. Sample delicious seafood with a local twist, like catfish fritters or Louisiana Gulf oysters, as you gaze across that awe-inspiring expanse of water. To get an even better view, stay at the gorgeous Tara Point Inn, which stands high on the nearby bluffs overlooking the meeting of the two rivers. The inn even features a gazebo overlooking the Mississippi (talk about romance).

If you're hoping for more time on the river, rent a boat at the Grafton Harbor or hop aboard one of the historic ferries that traverse the Mississippi. For a more romantic trip, take a cruise aboard a river boat — a sunset or wine cruise on the Hakuna Matata would be especially appropriate for fairy-tale vibes.

Speaking of ferries, that's one of the most fun ways to reach Grafton. The nearest major airport is in St. Louis, Missouri (about 50 minutes away by car). But you can travel from St. Louis to St. Charles and take one of the old-fashioned car ferries (although don't worry, they're not so old-fashioned that oxen are involved) to add a little whimsy to your trip.

Woodstock

While Illinois is much more than Chicago, the Windy City is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, so no one would blame you if you want to stay nearby. Luckily, there are plenty of charming towns nearby, like Woodstock, just 60 miles northwest of Chicago (about a 90-minute drive). Like many others on this list, Woodstock is known for its distinctive small-town charm with a historic downtown, crowned by the 19th-century Woodstock Opera House and flower-lined Woodstock Square. One of Woodstock's most romantic spots is Emerson & Oliver, an old-fashioned speakeasy that serves classy cocktails and charcuterie... and yes, you'll need a password to enter! You'll have to look around to find clues or sometimes peruse its social media accounts to figure out the password.

Outside of the historic core, the highlight of Woodstock lies in its farms and orchards. A bucolic countryside getaway on an idyllic farm where you can pick your own fruit or flowers? Now that is homegrown romance! Pick your own flowers and build a customized bouquet at the vibrant Dented Gate Flower Farm, or pick your own fruits and vegetables at the sustainable, family-run Sun Berry Orchards. If you visit Woodstock in the autumn, All Seasons Orchard features both an apple orchard and a pumpkin patch.

Makanda

Tourism has skyrocketed in Illinois in recent years, but there are still plenty of hidden gems — and one of these is Makanda. Makanda was once a haven for hippies, and much of that artsy flavor still remains. It's also known for its romantic wineries, making it ideal for an idyllic getaway for two. Makanda is a key stop on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, which connects 11 different wineries throughout southern Illinois. Blue Sky Vineyard is Makanda's Tuscan-inspired retreat, featuring unique Illinois wines and charming rooms in the expansive villa. Other wineries even offer overnight stays. There's an Airbnb available at Feather Hills Vineyard & Winery called "Farmhouse Cellars" that offers stunning views over the vineyards and a behind-the-scenes look at the winemaking process.

Makanda, located approximately two hours from St. Louis, Missouri, is also known for its unique, historical boardwalk, which lines the small downtown and connects the historical buildings of Makanda. The 100-year-old wooden boardwalk originally helped to keep people off the muddy streets. Today, the well-preserved boardwalk takes visitors to distinctive shops that reflect Makanda's 19th-century roots, such as at the Visions Art Gallery or the Makanda Trading Company.

Pomona

Located in the gorgeous Shawnee National Forest, Pomona is an ideal destination for couples hoping to escape into nature. Embrace the outdoors on one of Pomona's many hiking trails, like the famous Pomona Natural Bridge, a 90-foot-long sandstone arch high above the forest and creek.

Like Makanda, Pomona is also a stop on the Shawnee Wine Trail in southern Illinois. Pomona has some first-rate wineries, like the unique Pomona Winery, a lovely cabin-esque winery that focuses on non-grape wine varietals, made from local fruits like berries and apples. Very outdoorsy couples can stay at the Wine Trail Wilderness campground, where you can sleep amongst the vines after sipping wine all night long. To add some hoppier flavors to your romantic escape, head to the bed and breakfast of Von Jakob Winery & Brewery (also on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail).

Just under two hours away from Pomona is St. Louis, Missouri, and therefore the closest major airport. If you're coming from Chicago, expect at least a six-hour trip.
