United Airlines Will Soon Offer A Convertible Seat Option To Relax On Long-Haul Flights
If you are one of those flyers who just can't get comfortable in those airplane seats, United Airlines has some exciting news to share. The airline announced its new United Relax Row seating option for long-haul flights, and it will take passenger comfort to new heights. In 2027, passengers will be able lounge across their own three-seater couch, soft blanket and extra pillows included.
Technically, the Relax Row is a dedicated row of three economy seats that convert into a makeshift couch. So yes, travelers, this means you will soon be able to lay down and get some sleep during your flight without upgrading to first class. The option will be limited to United Airlines' 787 and 777 wide body planes only. But there will be up to 12 Relax Rows spread across United Economy and United Premium Plus sections of these planes. Lack of legroom is one of the most frustrating aspects of flying, and having three seats to yourself will give you plenty of space to spread out.
By 2030, the airline plans to have Relax Rows on over 200 planes. In addition to the pillows and blankets, United will throw in a custom-fitted mattress pad and a stuffed plush for the little ones to "help create a cozy, tranquil environment," according to a recent press release. Of course, travelers will have to wait until after takeoff to tuck themselves in.
What will the United Relax Row look like?
United Airlines' Relax Row is the first of its kind in North America. Other airlines worldwide have similar offerings, such as Air New Zealand's Economy Skycouch. The design includes three adjustable leg rests that fold up at 90-degree angles. Once engaged, the large sleeping area is ready to enjoy. No details about the cost of the United Relax Row have been shared publicly at the time of writing.
United says that the new seating option is suited perfectly for families with children. It's also ideal for solo travelers and couples looking to make a long-haul flight more enjoyable. As part of its announcement, United shared an Instagram post about the joys of discovering an entire row of seats is all yours. "You know that feeling when the plane door closes and you realize you get the full row to yourself? We made that a real thing," they wrote. With all kinds of unpoken rules to follow if the seat beside you is empty, paying for the full row will allow you to claim the space as your own.
The news comes not long after United Airlines announced its updated policy concerning passenger comfort. The airline has made it mandatory that people use headphones when playing audio on their personal devices and might even ban passengers who break the policy. The airline says that playing audio from personal speakers is disturbing to others. This is especially true for those who plan to stretch out and get some real sleep on a long-haul flight.
