One Of The Friendliest Countries In The World Is A Scenic Destination That Tourists Love

One of the best things about traveling is immersing yourself in the culture, especially when the locals extend a warm welcome to visitors. Destinations with friendlier people are always favored among travelers, and certain countries rank more highly than others for their warmth and hospitality. Many will tell you that one of the world's friendliest countries is Canada, which also happens to be one of the safest countries in the world for visitors in 2026.

Combining safety and friendliness with natural beauty and the world's longest coastline, who can blame tourists for simply adoring Canada? You'll surely feel the same as you visit some of Canada's top attractions and destinations, meeting locals along the way. From the welcoming Maritime provinces on the East Coast, to the community spirit of Vancouver Island on the West Coast, and everywhere in between, you're bound to encounter kindness wherever you go.

Is Canada really that friendly?

Canada is consistently rated among the friendliest, if not the friendliest nation in the world. But some locals insist that Canadians are best described as polite. "Canadians are polite and friendly but not in a personal way," one person wrote on the Reddit forum r/AskACanadian. "It takes time for them to really consider you their friend [...] But also, in an emergency situation you see people helping strangers or helping each other collectively way more easily than in other places in the world."

The stereotype about Canadian politeness was proven in one 2018 study, which found that Twitter users in Canada said "please" more frequently than users in America. And Canadians are, in fact, always apologizing. Canadian journalist Michael Valpy admitted in a BBC article, "I've apologized to a tree that I walked into."

In Canada, kindness is key for survival. Canadian writer Taras Grescoe told the BBC, "We're a small group of people, spread across the second-largest national territory in the world... We've always known that, in order to survive, we had to watch out for one another." But travelers should be prepared for chaos when hockey season rolls around. "[Canadians] will pull your car out of the snow bank then offer you a coffee without hesitation. But will also burn down a city if their hockey team wins a big game," says one Redditor.

Locals say Canada's friendliest people are on the East Coast

While you'll likely encounter friendly — or at the very least polite — people all over Canada, some regions are especially known for their hospitality. It is a huge, incredibly diverse country, after all. Many people consider the East Coast the friendliest part of Canada. "East Coasters are in a league of their own," wrote one Redditor on r/AskACanadian. "When people talk about how 'nice' Canadians are, I'm 100% convinced they're talking about people living on the East Coast."

Newfoundland and Labrador, in particular, is legendary for its friendliness, another user points out. So much so, that their version of a knock-knock joke simply goes, "Knock knock, come on in, the kettle's on!" Newfoundland's hospitality is even showcased in the famous musical "Come From Away." The province's culture was once ranked among the friendliest in the world by Canadian publication Maclean's.

Those who wish to experience its friendly culture firsthand should visit Newfoundland in the spring or summer to see the famous Iceberg Alley, one of Canada's best destinations to snap beautiful pictures. This is also the best time of year to visit nearby Nova Scotia and witness the Bay of Fundy's dramatic tides.
