Samantha Brown's Brilliant Packing Tip Saves Luggage Space For Souvenirs

Aside from helping us narrow down where to go, prominent people in the travel industry (or at least frequent travelers who post on social media) often share their wisdom regarding topics like how to save money on overseas flights, public transportation tricks, and other common aspects of travel. Samantha Brown, host of the PBS travel show "Samantha Brown's Places to Love," is no exception. And Brown's tips for a hassle-free getaway often involve what — and how much — to pack.

One of Brown's more surprising packing tips involves clothing items that you may have been planning to throw out. On her website, Brown says, "Put old shoes and sneakers aside for your next trip. Use them then leave them. You'll save room in your luggage." This smart packing strategy does not mean that she returns home barefoot, however. For a standard, week-long trip, Brown reveals that she usually sticks to three pairs of shoes. If you're content to part with one or two of these pairs at some point along the way, you can fill their suitcase space on the trip home with souvenirs.

Samantha Brown encourages travelers to pack light

According to Samantha Brown's website, the three pairs of shoes she packs are "comfortable sneakers, a chic pair of flats, and something that can be dressed up or dressed down (i.e. a good pair of boots)." Another way to save space in your luggage is to wear your bulkiest shoes on travel days, like on the flight or in the car. But no matter which pair of shoes you choose to discard during your travels, be sure not to litter, and use a trash bin instead. If the shoes are still good quality, you could even donate them to a local thrift shop.

One of the reasons Brown discusses packing tips so often is because she advocates for just using carry-on luggage whenever possible. "It only takes the airline losing your luggage once to never want to check a bag again," she explains. "I stick to carry-on luggage that's 22″ or less." Packing light enough to travel with only a carry-on is a popular tactic among frequent travelers. Author and fellow television host Rick Steves agrees with the strategy. "When you carry your own luggage, it's less likely to get lost, broken, or stolen," he stated in a blog post. "Lengthy delay or quick, last-minute flight change? No problem —your bag is with you."
