Tennessee's Gateway To Great Smoky Mountains National Park Is Full Of Outdoor Fun

Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, is a lively destination that had humble beginnings in the 1700s as a quiet, small mill town. Over generations, its proximity to vast protected yet accessible wilderness trails has drawn hikers and wildlife enthusiasts from all over the country. Today, the city has also developed a playful, family-oriented side and boasts dozens of entertainment venues and attractions along its main strip, the Pigeon Forge Parkway.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, one of the best U.S. national parks for hiking, is a 20-minute drive from Pigeon Forge and offers endless opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and scenic drives. Beyond the boundaries of the park, the Pigeon Forge area offers many opportunities for water sports, as well as off-road ATV and Jeep tours. The city is also home to a museum dedicated to the Titanic, the Hollywood Wax Museum, and Dollywood – a massive outdoor theme park founded by Dolly Parton, complete with roller coasters and a 35-acre water park. Even if your focus is on nature, Pigeon Forge offers opportunities to balance it out with other types of fun activities.

The nearest major airport is in Knoxville, about 40 miles west of Pigeon Forge, roughly a one-hour drive. The Knoxville airport connects to major U.S. cities including Atlanta, Chicago, and Dallas. Renting a car is a practical option, giving you flexibility to explore the Smokies. However, there are also shuttle services from Knoxville for travelers who prefer not to drive.

Explore the outdoors near Pigeon Forge

Great Smoky Mountain National Park is the most-visited national park in the U.S. Its ancient Southern Appalachian mountains straddle the forested terrain between Tennessee and North Carolina. From Pigeon Forge, it's an easy 20-minute drive to the Sugarlands Visitor Center, where you can check in with park staff for tips and recommendations based on the weather and your hiking experience. If you're looking for an easy stroll through the forest, try out the Gatlinburg Trail. It's an easy 4 miles round trip that passes alongside and eventually across the West Prong Little Pigeon River. You can access the trail from the welcome center, and it's dog- and bike-friendly.

If, instead, you're up for a real challenge, it's a short walk or drive from the welcome center to the Cove Mountain Trailhead. The trail runs about 8.5 miles long in one direction and includes gorgeous views at the top of Cove Mountain with an elevation gain of roughly 3,000 feet.

For a family-friendly experience, Dollywood's Splash Country provides a 35-acre waterpark with slides, wave pools, and lazy rivers. Tickets start at $84.99 for children and $94.99 for adults (as of this writing). While not a wilderness experience, it's a fun way to enjoy the outdoors and cool off after a day of hiking or sightseeing. In addition, The Island in Pigeon Forge is a large outdoor entertainment area that features a Ferris wheel, live music, and open-air shopping — perfect for evenings or rainy days.

Planning your visit to Pigeon Forge

Pigeon Forge caters especially to folks who love the outdoors, so its lodging options range from cozy mountain cabins with forest views to campgrounds right at the park's edge. Cabin rentals provide privacy and a natural setting, often with outdoor decks or fire pits for evening relaxation. Average nightly rates for cabins range from $100 to $300, depending on size and location, while local motels and inns provide more budget-friendly options around $80 to $120 per night. Booking ahead is particularly important during summer and fall when outdoor activities peak.

The spring and fall seasons are ideal for outdoor exploration in this region that's not too crowded. Spring brings mild temperatures and beautiful blossoms, while fall showcases the Smoky Mountains' famed foliage — a photographer's dream. Summer is warm and popular with both local and visiting families, so roads, trails, and rivers get extremely crowded. Winter sees much fewer crowds, making it perfect for those seeking a bit more breathing room and who don't mind lower temperatures, though some higher-elevation trails may be icy or closed. In fact, Dollywood is one of the best tourist attractions for a December getaway.

For an outdoor-focused trip to Pigeon Forge, bring sturdy hiking shoes and a day pack for carrying water and snacks, bug repellent, sunscreen, and layers as needed. If you plan to paddle, swim, or tube, don't forget to also pack water shoes and swimwear. Binoculars are helpful for birdwatching, the best time for which is in the springtime when songbirds are most active.
