Europe's Biggest Hotel Operator Is Tanking. Here's How It's Affecting Bookings.

If you have upcoming hotel reservations in Europe, you may want to check in on their status. The continent's largest hotel operator, Revo Hospitality Group, has declared insolvency. That means its 260 hotels could experience some upheaval this year. However, if your plans take you to Austria or Germany, you have less to worry about. The group's 125 properties in those two countries are unaffected.

Revo Hospitality Group, also known as HR Group, started in 2008 and has crept into 146 cities across a dozen European countries. The group's own brands include Hyperion and Vagabond Club, while it also operates properties by Marriott, Hilton, IHG, and Wyndham, among others. The hospitality group cited financial strain as the reason for the restructuring.

Filing for insolvency in Germany means that the hospitality group can continue to operate. It is unclear which hotels, if any, will close while administrators oversee the restructuring. Avoiding inconveniences while traveling is always recommended, especially when it comes to issues at hotels, such as "getting walked" when you arrive. However, travelers who may have booked a hotel under the Revo Hospitality Group umbrella should pay close attention to the status of their reservations before they pack their bags.

What should travelers do?

News of the organization's struggles made headlines in the hospitality world in January as vacationers and approximately 8,300 employees across Europe wondered what would happen next. It's unclear exactly how bookings within its hotels will be impacted, but the organization says it will try to honor them. But those with hotel reservations who are traveling beyond March 2026 could see changes to their plans. Revo Hospitality Group did not offer any concrete guarantees for travelers who have bookings in their hotels beyond the end of March.

Those who already have bookings at a hotel operated by the organization are encouraged to contact the specific hotel where they intend to stay to ensure their booking is still active. If the hotel in which you expected to stay does close, you could be eligible for compensation from the credit card you used to book. To avoid a situation like this in the future, travelers may want to explore whether or not using a travel company like Costco Travel is worth it when they book their next getaway.

Reports say that as Revo Hospitality Group restructures, individual hotel management and administration may change. Bringing in new staff and new systems could potentially impact operations, and potential guests should monitor reservations through their travel company or directly on a specific hotel's website. The last thing any traveler wants is to learn that a shuffle of hotel management resulted in a loss of guest data, including their reserved room.
