California's Closest Airport To Yosemite National Park Just Got A Major Expansion

Giant sequoia trees at the airport aren't exactly typical, but that's exactly what you'll find at Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT), the gateway to Yosemite National Park, Kings Canyon National Park, and Sequoia, America's second-oldest national park. In December 2025, the airport capped off a $150 million expansion — the largest in its history – that nearly doubled its footprint. As part of the FATforward expansion project, the airport added a new state-of-the-art concourse, public art, and amenities that will make travel easier for both departing and arriving passengers. The airport has developed a new baggage handling system, added 8,000 square feet and five lanes to the TSA area, and installed TV monitors and large, easy-to-read signage throughout the airport, making it much simpler to navigate for newcomers, unlike some of the world's worst airports.

One of the airport's centerpieces is the replica hand-sculpted sequoia forest in the arrivals area, showcasing the national parks. On your trek through, you sadly won't see deer or wildlife, but you will spot a Hudson News and a Starbucks (and an information counter in case you get lost). On the departure side, there are food options that include Peet's Coffee, Mad Duck Brewing, and Ike's Love & Sandwiches.

The gateway to the San Joaquin Valley

Together with the recent airport expansion, more airlines and more passengers than ever are flying into the San Joaquin Valley. In 2024, Fresno Yosemite International counted over 2.5 million passengers, 87% more than a decade prior. Currently, all major domestic airlines serve the airport, as do Aeromexico and Volaris. Local passengers can now directly fly to three cities in Mexico as well as to major airports up and down the West Coast and across the country seasonally, including to Chicago O'Hare, America's most-connected airport, without having to make the multi-hour trek from San Francisco or LAX.

While most visitors to Yosemite National Park visit during the summer months, the Fresno area sees mild weather during the winter months (average lows are above freezing) and over 300 days of sun annually. Whether you're renting a car to make the drive or are grabbing a ride through your favorite rideshare app, you'll find a dedicated ground transportation area to keep you moving. The airport is roughly 1.5 hours from Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. During peak holiday weeks, including the 4th of July and the Holidays, don't underestimate the crowds and arrive early. Worst case, spend a few minutes admiring the floor-to-ceiling mural created by local artists. While the national parks are major anchors for drawing visitors to Fresno, don't miss visiting some of the quirky attractions in California's gateway to Yosemite on your trip.
